He’s a presidential contender and the main attraction at tonight’s annual fundraiser for Tennessee’s Republican Party. He’s raised more money in the state than any other Republican hopeful. Some of the state’s most influential Republicans signed on early to help get him elected.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet … former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney?

Like everything in Republican presidential politics in Tennessee, Fred Thompson’s three-month flirtation with a White House bid will have an impact on Saturday night’s annual Statesman’s Dinner fundraiser...

"Thompson talk threatens to overshadow Romney at GOP dinner" I agree, Thompson has a bigger belly than Romney.

Thompson and Romney are two very interesting candidates. I’d take either one over McCain or Rudy.

Thompson won’t even be there. It’s nice to see that the MSM now has the power to predict what people are gonna talk about.

Those folks didn’t pick Romney as the Statesman of the Year for no reason. He has many supporters there.

But, just like Marsha Blackburn and John Duncan, many of them will soon be switching their support from Mitt to Fred.

Well since they are from Fred’s homestate and personal friends I think they should support him over Romney now that he is in. I am glad Fred is in and I am a Mitt supporter. My money (ok I’m cheap, my talk) is still on Romney. Fred has great appeal. Matching Mitt’s campaign organization and executive skills will be harder. He may do it, but it will be a great competition to see.

Overshadow or whatever, Rudy McRomney need to be beat out for the nomination. Duncan Hunter and Fred, the only true conservatives. Fred probably less conservative than Hunter, but he’ll do.

Yes he does. The fundraising for Romney in Tennessee has been amazing. According to one report, the Romney campaign has raised as much in TN as all the other Republican candidates and the Democrat candidates combined.

Thompson has the message though. All the organization skills in the world doesn't mean jack without the message.

I would, at this point, really like to see a Fred/Mitt ticket. It is the only one, right now, that I would consider voting for. The other two main runners are for amnesty and are libs at heart. Being a Conservative it is getting much harder to support anyone in the Republican party.

Make that Mitt/Fred. Mitt has executive experience that Fred doesn’t. Fred has communication skills that are rare in politics.
I’m not a one issue voter, and both of them are close to what I want maybe 90% of the time. Esp. WOT and tax policy.

Those folks didn’t pick Romney as the Statesman of the Year for no reason. He has many supporters there. Romney wasn't selected as the Statesman of the Year, he is the keynote speaker for the dinner. If I recall correctly, dedicated party members, (big fundraisers, etc.) are honored as the statesmen of the year. I've attended but it's been a few years...

Flip-flop Willard Romney would bring NOTHING to a ticket.

Hell, he can’t carry his own state.

Romney neeeds to go home and apply to be a game show host, a much better gig for him.

A REAL conservative is in the race now.

Stick a fork in him. Mitt’s done.

Executive experience was highly over-rated in the cases of Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

And Arbraham Lincoln, Harry S. Truman and John F. Kennedy did quite well for the nation without it.
