>Funny you should mention that-just read somewhere this weekend that McClintock is really liking fred...<

Hi Mom!

FDT’s name came up on “Today” this morning. They all seemed to like him, too, especially Dan Rather.

Strange that the article’s author didn’t mention the OC Lincoln Club’s own website headline the day after Fred Spoke to them: “Thompson a Big Hit at Annual Dinner!”

Nor did she bother to talk to Club President richard Wagner for her piece. Wagner told Human Events that “Novak’s column was not quite on. There was no big let-down in the room. There was a lot of energy in the room, and people are still excited even today based upon e-mails I’m receiving.”

http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=20680&keywords=fred+thompson

Ed Morrissey, of Captain’s Quarters, on a companion blog, Heading Right, wrote:

“The Lincoln Club, of the conservative California enclave in Orange County, invited Fred Thompson to speak at their annual dinner. This has widely been seen as a tacit endorsement of Thompson’s potential candidacy for the GOP’s 2008 presidential nomination, and the Lincoln Club’s endorsement (tacit or otherwise) carries a powerful weight to anyone fortunate enough to receive it. Thompson gave every indication that he wants that support in an excellent speech to the gathered Republican power brokers, his answer to the debate that he could not attend.

Fred gave everyone something to like in this speech...

Quite frankly, I find this speech brilliant, and nearly perfect for a center-right run past most of the current slate of candidates. If Fred Thompson can stick to these themes and produce the kind of down-home charisma for which he is famous, he could run the table.”

http://headingright.com/2007/05/05/fred-speaks/

It appears the speech was much more successful with the local Lincoln Club than the OC Register is willing to let on...

money, staff, platform, commitment

These things come to candidates who excite the base. I think Thompson is exciting quite a few people. Let’s see how this turns out.

What a day of many coinky-dinks, as you would say.

I am from the Show Me state, and I am enjoying watching and waiting as these guys strut their stuff and we learn more. I think Romney, Tommy Thompson, and Gilmore would be good, effective presidents. I think veep would be a good move for Hunter, if he could deliver California.

“I’m sure there is plenty of time for pundits to nit-pick Fred Thompson to death but I think what we learned from the Clinton admin is this- character counts. We will not know what any candidate will do on every subject and every problem that he will face.We need to know that that candidate will have the strength of good character to do the right thing. Fred Thompson has that good character.”

Exactly right (no pun intended). He gives one speech before he even announces and they are all over him like flies on poop. This is a subtle hit job and we will see many more as Fred enters the race.

Fred is a man of character and is not a cheap panderer, flip-flopper or anger challenged. He has guts and can communicate.

I don’t know why anyone cares what this Bunis woman thinks. I have never heard of her. And her recommendation at the end of her article of Newt Gingrich, is a hoot. Talk about a recipe for electoral disaster. He is the only candidate who has higher negatives than Hillary.

I do not even know if I care that much what Orange County collectively thinks. IMHO California is so far gone that no Republican can expect to carry it at the national level. That said, I think that genuine conservatives in Orange County, not libertarians, will like Fred Thompson a lot.

“It appears the speech was much more successful with the local Lincoln Club than the OC Register is willing to let on...

Thanks. Best post so far. The night of the Lincoln Club event, I watched his other interview on the web. I liked him. But not a five on a five scale.

More like dress rehearsals, you know? Before a friendly, but critical audience.

But taking that into account, it was his first step into the ring, I think all is well with the Fred campaign.

Pretty soon, he has got to get his big likeable mug in front of big numbers of Americans. I don’t think he can wait forever.

Ass long as it’s not Hunter Thompson.

Exactly... The American populace is tired of ‘Kingmakers’, and 1% of the population deciding who is best to represent us — the ones who are actually working on a daily basis, and have to pay for their ‘big ideas’. These billionaires are immensely out of touch, and they prove it when they decide who best serves their interests, rather than America’s.

Until the immigration issue came back to the forefront, I had been looking for a Republican candidate who could “win”. But, from what I read on some threads Friday night and today, none of the top three (McCain, Giuliani or Romney) can be trusted on immigration, and neither can Gingrich or Thompson. This is based on their history with regard to immigration issues and measures. To me, equally important, I don’t trust any of them on globalism, free trade and our relationship with China.

So, I am now considering Duncan Hunter. I believe (tho I will check) that he has been consistent on all these issues, plus he is “good” on the terrorism issue. Problem is, he polls (I believe) at about 1%. How can we convince people, as you say, that policy is what matters-—because policy is, IMO, where Duncan Hunter shines.

“Calling them country clubers is just another form of class warfare, imho.”

You’re right, it is, but the Democrats and Liberals have made this an issue for many years — and many in the younger generations support the left for precisely this reason. I don’t think it helps the GOP to play into their hands by showing that the only candidates who get any respect are those hand-picked by the wealthy few. It doesn’t do our country any good either. If we want to beat the socialists in the long run we need to take a hard look at why they get traction with the whole ‘class-warfare’ argument in the first place. Of course, this is just my opinion, but I don’t think I’m that far off the mark...

I bet whoever you are arguing with hasn’t even visited the CFR website.

http://www.cfr.org/index.html

No self respecting secret organization who wanted to take over the world would allow Angelina Jolie to be a member, for heaven’s sake.

Fred Thompson doesn’t appear to have even authored any papers for CFR.

Fred believes in free trade, but he would never barter away our sovereignty. He is dedicated to the principles of States’ Rights.

I'm currently in the Rohrabacher camp... waiting. :-)
Also, many conservatives say they’re not sure where Thompson stands on the issues. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, who is still uncommitted, said he’s still casting about for a candidate who can speak to the issues most important to him, such as illegal immigration, China, trade and globalization. And, Rohrabacher said, even after some private time with Thompson, he wasn’t convinced he was the guy. Rohrabacher was so unimpressed, he skipped the Lincoln Club event.
