Fired McCain Campaign Aides Sound Off
U.S. News & World Report ^ | May 31, 2007 | Dan Gilgoff

Two former aides hired to spearhead religious outreach for presidential candidate John McCain say that they were virtually ignored by the campaign and that McCain's top campaign strategists are intent on winning votes of religious voters without having to develop serious ties to faith communities. The aides, who were fired in early April after roughly three months on the job, said the campaign staff declined to return scores of their phone calls and E-mail messages, denied them access to leaders of the McCain campaign, and pressed them to collect church directories—a controversial tactic—as the centerpiece of a strategy to woo "values" voters.

"In the end, you came away with the strong sense that they had contempt for the faith-based community," says Marlene Elwell, one of those fired staffers. Elwell, a prominent Christian-right activist, was hired by McCain in December 2005 to be national director of his "Americans of Faith" coalition. "The way we were being treated it was as if we had leprosy."

The more one reads about John McCain, the more one learns that he is unworthy of public support.

No surprise here.

McCain is PRO homosexual and PRO abortion. Any serious Christian find that appalling. McCain is a dumbed down leftist with no core values or beliefs and lacks clear thinking. McCain is a disaster.

Doubt too many folks know it, but Marlene Elwell was one of THE key individuals who, through very effective grassroots labor, stopped the original ERA.

The political class thought it was a done deal, a slamdunk, but true grassroots people like Phyllis Schlafley and Marlene Elwell proved them wrong.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - looks to me like McPain isn’t very interested in being nominated and that suits me just fine.

I would have to agree that it's rather pointless for the McCain campaign to conduct "outreach" to the religious community.

He's not going to find many votes there, after all.

“Haynes said she was particularly disturbed by what she called the campaign’s overreliance on collecting church directories as an organizing strategy. “The campaign plan to get the [religious] vote is to rape and pillage the church [membership] lists, and we didn’t want to do that.”

I learned my lesson the hard way about that sort of politico’s tricks.......as a Veteran activist who was chumped by a politician here in Michigan with regard to a certain issue he pretended to be sympathetic to, I and others collected many many thousands of signatures, addresses, and phone numbers on petitions from people who were truly sympathetic and supportive to the issue and cause........the State Senator turned his back on the issue, and proceeded to make personal political and fundraising use of all of the names of these good and decent people who signed our petitions.

Sort of like putting your name etc on online petitions, btw.

So you’re saying that many of the tactics aren’t and haven’t been used by candidates that meet the socon litmus test on other issues and would then be seen as necessary to reach that base?

This is pretty much to be expected. His attack on Bush’s visit to Bob Jones University in the 2000 election, as part of a plot organized by the MSM and probably the DNC to split the Evangelical and Catholic votes, pretty much revealed what he thinks of the religious right.

This time he said he would mend fences with the Evangelicals, who were the main intended victim of that propaganda ploy. But why believe it, given his long term record?

Sure. But with good reason to be so. Fine. Just another episode in the complete and public disintegration of McLoon.

Have I just missed them or have there actually been no pro-McCain threads here on FR? I haven’t seen any.

The thing that McPain keeps forgetting is that:

‘WE DON’T WANT HIM AS PRESIDENT’

now, yesterday or tomorrow!!!

McCain is too evil to be throwing around the names of Christian groups/Churches/individuals. He has NOTHING but contempt for Christians! Let it be known, just like these fired workers are!

You’re right .. this info was no surprise.

During 2000, McCain’s wife walked around with a “Hillary pin” all the time .. what does that tell you .. if you don’t know, you’re either deaf, dumb or just plain stupid.

McCain is done! He just doesn’t have the good sense to sit down and STHU.
