[Tom] Selleck Rules Out 'Magnum' [P.I.] Movie Cameo
Internet Movie Database ^ | May 17, 2007

Posted on 06/03/2007 6:26:37 PM PDT by grundle

Actor Tom Selleck has ruled out a cameo role in a planned big screen version of his 1980s TV hit Magnum P.I. - because he refuses to trivialize the show. Selleck is against compromising the memory of a television show he is proud to have starred in by appearing in a big-budget movie making fun of it. He says, "I tell you what worries me - because I love Magnum and we have loyal fans - is they take these TV show titles, and they buy them and they spend $100 million on special effects, and then they make fun of them and trivialize it. Then they try and get the actor who used to be in it to do some ridiculous cameo to prove to the audience that it's OK. And I will not do that."

Thank the Lord. I loved "Magnum,PI," and the idea that Matthew McConaghey will be playing Thomas Sullivan Magnum makes me ill.

What's next -- a female TC? Rick as a vegan chef? Brad Pitt as Higgins, and the Lads becoming Pomeranians?

Dead on. Good on Selleck.

And enough of these crappy movies.

Selleck seems to be a principled man. I admire him more than almost any actor around. We lived for Magnum PI to come on.

I didn't think there was anything special about Magnum besides Selleck's physical appearance, and can't imagine the movie will be even decent. IMHO, it was Just Another Detective Show.

That being said, Selleck WAS Magnum. Casting someone else as Magnum makes as much sense as casting Ving Rhames as Kojak.

and the Lads becoming Pomeranians?

Naw. They couldn't. They wouldn't.

Good for Tom. I refuse to watch a girly-man playing Magnum.

They’ll probably play Higgins as a fairy, instead of a war hero with refined tastes and a title he refuses to mention.

Higgins made that show, between the “lads” and his boorish persona, Johnathon Hillerman was as important as Tom Selleck.

I agree. All the characters were important, but Higgins vs. Magnum was one of the predictable comic elements that kept things light.

And, in spite of all the single men, there was a level of decency that I don’t think is likely in a movie made today.

(That said, my father, also a Navy veteran of Vietnam - two tours - found the whole concept preposterous!)

I just bet they would. Just to spite the fans! (Can you tell I am bitter about Hollyweird?)

I read where the producers asked Selleck to do one more season after its long run.
The reason was the cast and crew needed the payday of another season.’
He agreed for a $500.000 bonus signup and then divided
the money amongst cast and crew. Classy guy!

I've read "The Virginian" about 50 times over my life and enjoy it every time. It is truly an American classic of honor and freedom. For 30 years I wondered who in Hollywood could really play the man with no name. About two years ago it hit me. Tom Selleck is the Virginian. Too bad he's too old for the part now.

good for him. goes to show everyone that hollyweird just doesn’t have anyone that can come up with an original idea. the reason why movies continue to bomb.

It’s just impossible to cast someone else as Magnum. Tom Selleck was Magnum. It’s just as simple as that. Who else could do it? And if this movie is truly going to take a jokey approach to the old material...oy.

Well . . . Uh

Oh, there was that dream of living in Hawaii thing. These were dorky, drippy, decent guys. Not much at all- but enough.

I remember him from when I worked at Universal, in the Record division accounting department. Met him a couple of times on the lot. One of the very nicest persons I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.
Still have friends in Hollywood, and there is NEVER a whiff of anything untoward about Tom Selleck. He has a brother who is a well-respected contractor, so it runs in the family, IMO.
It would be my pleasure to run into him again before I die.

I agree with that. I think the first movie of this genre was Dragnet, and it was a mistake. I’d like to see a movie of this type that actually plays it straight.

I can see McConaghey as Magnum. On the other hand...William Macy as Higgins? No disrespect intended, but there simply is no substitute for John Hillerman.
