BEIJING (AFP) - A disease that has killed 18,000 pigs and helped send pork prices soaring in China is likely to get worse, the government said Tuesday, as it called for a vaccination drive to stem the epidemic.

Over 45,000 pigs have been hit by the highly pathogenic "blue-ear disease" between January and May, even before the peak season of the summer and fall has started, the Ministry of Agriculture said on its websit

PRRS doesn’t attack the pig’s lungs like Influenza, it attacks one of the white blood cells that ordinarily kill other diseases, and so the pig ends up dying of those other diseases, like pneumonia. It is a slow disease, and the R for reproductive is because piglets often die before birth and are stillborn, or are born weakened and quickly die.

Although PRRS hits the white cells, it is not the same as HIV or AIDS which hits the T cells of the white blood cells.

You can go to the LINK for more information if you are interested. However, the disease does not affect humans, which is the good news.

The bad news is that wind can spread it one mile, infected pigs can spread it, and shoes that have barnyard dirt can spread it.

Better watch those pig ear dog treats...my vet says NOT to give them to your dog as they carry diseases that can kill dogs. It was my dog’s favorite treat, until the vet said not to give them to him.

WE don’t buy any food that’s not from the USA/Canada anymore and we’re going to start eliminating food from Canada. No pond-raised ‘seafood’ from Indonesia, no packaged Asian food from Malaysia, and no fruits/vegetables from Mexico.

I’ve spent considerable time in these garden spots and their ideas of hygiene are very different from ours. Kinda like rice paddy fertilization in Vietnam. I’d almost rather be hit than to take cover in a rice paddy.

The Chinese are so greedy they don’t care what the consequences of their actions are, particularly if it affects the us in the US.

Mornin' Gail

Hadn't heard the disease angle to pig's ears. My Labs love them, too. I had heard that they present a choking hazard to some dogs and they are kind of high in cholesterol. My vet didn't say anything about diseases, but said to limit them to 1 ear a month and then to watch them to make sure they don't get too excited and choke on them.

Goat hooves are another treat that my Labs love. Takes 'em about a month to chew one down to the nub.

I just had stitches put into my back and bought Johnson & Johnson pads and Wegman’s tape to cover them......both are made in China.

Why do these need to be made in China? Are they really labor intensive to make?

Our CEO’s and politicians are selling this country out.

I wouldn't worry, since what they are _exporting_ for pork probably comes from Falun Gong.

Joking, but....Would anyone be surprised?

However, the disease does not affect humans, yet which is the good news.

Considering the amount of stuff that comes out of China, it's just a matter of time.

I saw that too. You can’t even get a band-aid made in this country anymore. Unbelievable.

It really is.

Pigs are similar to humans in terms of diseases affecting both. That’s why they’re often used in drug and disease testing. Viruses are particularly able to make the leap — remember “swine flu”?

They carry parasites that processing doesn’t kill is what she told me..and the parasites can cause damage in the intestinal tracts in dogs. I started reading the labels on the things I buy Rocket and all to many of them are from foreign countries. She said the beef hide things are ok, just not the pork ones. Chicken jerky is okay too. Rock loves those but they don’t last long.
