Fourth Suspect in Alleged Terror Plot Surrenders (in Trinidad)
WABC ^ | 6/5/2007 | n/a

Trinidadian police tell The Associated Press that Abdel Nur, a Guyanese suspect in an alleged plot to attack New York's John F. Kennedy Airport, has surrendered.

The news comes a day after surveillance video was released of one of the suspects in the terror plot targeting the airport, taken just minutes before his arrest.

In the video, the accused mastermind of the terror plot is seen leaving a diner shortly before his arrest.

Eyewitness News reporter Jeff Rossen takes a closer look.

In the diner surveillance tape, obtained by Eyewitness News, you can see the alleged ring leader and a government informant eating at a back booth.

Police say 63-year-old Russell Defreitas and the informant would often lay the groundwork for the attack in their meetings. The two men then leave, first the informant and then the suspect, blending in with the diner crowd.

After leaving, the two men get into a truck. Defreitas was arrested just a few blocks away and arraigned over the weekend. Two other suspects, Kareem Ibrahim and Abdul Kadir, are in custody in Trinidad and will fight extradition to the United States. They faced a judge today....

But officials say it was Defreitas, a former airport worker, who led the charge to blow up the fuel pipeline at JFK. He allegedly plotted with the informant at Brooklyn's Lindenwood Diner, where their conversations were recorded.

Officials say the informant was the key to cracking the case. He made several overseas trips with the men to discuss the plot. He also visited a radical Muslim compound in Trinidad and tagged along on airport surveillance trips. In fact, officials say the informant was so convincing that Defreitas said he was "sent by Allah to be the one to carry out the attack."

Yup. More apprehensions and surrenders to come no doubt.

Allah willing, of course! :)

This will probably wind up on page 42 of the NYT. After all, Scooter got 30 months today.

“Score one for the good guys”

That’s funny. The informant was a drug dealer who was cooperating with the FBI, presumably to lighten his sentence.

And your point is? Is not the breaking up of this plot good for America?

He IS a good guy as far as I’m concerned. He put his life at considerable risk associating with these nutbags and helped to save untold numbers of lives.

Now, why would the 4th suspect surrender.....? Why wouldn’t he just flee to Iran or go into hiding?

Wasn't that where one of the other alleged perps was going before they arrested him, Iran via Venezuela?

I’m hearing of connections to Iran on the boob tube, can’t wait to hear how this turns out.

Maybe this will work it’s way up to page ten in the NYT.

Correctamundo! For some sort of "religious conference" IIRC.

I remain puzzled as to why the guy would surrender himself? Not guilty? Afraid of being offed? Remorse? Seriously! What would cause a motivated terrorist to surrender himself....

Given the nature of our judicial system, maybe it's best to eliminate these people off shore.
