Immigration bill survives Cornyn amendment
The Hill ^ | 6/6/07 | Klaus Marre

Posted on 06/06/2007 12:56:31 PM PDT by Jean S

The frail coalition that is shepherding an immigration bill toward final passage in the Senate withstood another attack on its compromise language Wednesday, fighting off a possible “poison pill” amendment from Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas).

The amendment would have restricted the number of illegal immigrants eligible to remain in the country. It was defeated 51-46 when Republican Sens. Larry Craig (Idaho), Pete Domenici (N.M.), Lindsey Graham (S.C.), Chuck Hagel (Neb.), Jon Kyl (Ariz.), Richard Lugar (Ind.), Mel Martinez (Fla.), John McCain (Ariz.), Arlen Specter (Pa.) and George Voinovich (Ohio) voted with the majority of Democrats to defeat the language.

Instead, the Senate passed a similar, narrower amendment that would prevent some criminals, including sex offenders and some gang members, from becoming legal residents.

Hard to swallow. Not only will illegals get amnesty but if a US court had ordered them deported previously that order will be nullified. Absurd!

600,000 of them were ordered to get the heck out of here. They lost their deportation proceedings and defied court order to leave America

This is an unmistakable signal that if this amnesty passes there will be no deportation of those illegal aliens who don't sign up for Z Visas or who otherwise screw up and commit crimes once they get Z Visas

It may be necessary to soon shift gears. I am writing a piece on this. I believe this has to be a bi partisan fight againste the amnesty or we lose. The mainstream media is painting those oposing this sham as stricktly from the right. Yet we all know that 68% of americans oppose this according to every poll taken. We desperately need the independents and democrats in this and we need talking points to convince them they need to get involved.

Newbie here (but I’ve been lurking a loooong time!) I tried calling using a WH number from a MinutemanHQ e-mail and got a really RUDE individual who told me the comment line was closed today and no, he couldn’t give the President a message. I told him, “No wonder nothing ever gets done in Washington” and hung up the phone. I will try on the other line tomorrow, but FYI they aren’t taking messages on one of the numbers given by MHQ: 202-456-1414.

Maybe Republican voters are as dumb as Democrat voters after all.

Kyl would have voted liberal if his vote was needed. He was taking a little cover after the outrage against him by a few conservatives in AZ.

“Instead, the Senate passed a similar, narrower amendment that would prevent some criminals, including sex offenders and some gang members,”

*some* criminals?!?!? *some* gang members?!?!?
*some* of them get to stay in the USA and become citizens!?!?

All the Cornyn Amendment did was demand that *no* criminals with records should have the Z visa amnesty. This bill is an utter travesty!

“This is an unmistakable signal that if this amnesty passes there will be no deportation of those illegal aliens who don’t sign up for Z Visas or who otherwise screw up and commit crimes once they get Z Visas”

Absolutely correct point.
And further, it proves how this bill is not about fixing the immigration system, but ensuring it remains broken and thus we have defacto ‘open borders’.

I don’t think ID has voted out an incumbent senator or governor in the Republican primary since 1966. But it is nice to wish they would. ID people like most others just go with the “friendly” incumbent.

“The real brilliance to what Cornyn was trying to do was that this is tied with a big push to crack down on identity theft.. the fact is that many (if not most) illegals are able to stay in the country because they have committed felonies like identity theft or tax fraud.. The Cornyn amendment would automatically make most ineligible.. Smart move.. to bad the McLame/Hagels of the world have gone off the deep end..”

I wish Cornyn could bring Kyl back from the dark side.

Of course it survived...the fix is in. The bill will pass, it has been preordained.

“A sure way to damage this country even more. Our biggest danger come from our own elected officials.”

Brought to you by 49 Democrat Senators and a handful of RINO Republicans.

I just sent Craig (R-Big Ag) asking him how he could possibly justify his vote on this [proposed] amendment. We’ll see if I get a reply.

I also told him that my family would not be contributing to the RNSC as long as he is in the Senate.

But again can the Republican voters understand? They seem to want only one of the “big three” now.

“How about give the dimes to those who are doing the right thing.. it isn’t enough to complain to those who are pushing this bill.. we should also reward those who are opposing this or trying to do the right thing, like Cornyn. When the RNC sees where the money is going, it may impact the overall party policy.”

Correct. When I call my Senators, I mention that I’ve stopped giving to the NRSC because of their support of pro-amnesty RINOs, but that I will support the right Senators individually.

These guys are definitely voting to reinstute a system of slavery and peonage in the United States.

That's a best case scenario. The scenarios I see are much worse.

Perhaps that will make our illegal alien loving incumbent complacent in the face of a challenger.

“Amazingly, Lott voted against the Kennedy amendment and for the Cornyn amendment. I predict he will vote for the bill itself though.”

Lott is partially redeeming himself.... Maybe he needs more irate citizens calling him.

In fact, I would say that the angry response from the base *is being noted by the media* and it is having an effect.

Every single vote *for* the Cornyn Amendment should be a vote *against* the final bill. Call and make the point that the failure of the Cornyn Amendment makes this bill fundamentally flawed!

Craig may have a nestegg set aside and is ready to bail out, or he may be going the lobbyist route himself. Of course, ID might still reelect him too.

“The raping of America by the Senate!...thanks alot you bastards!”

Make a note that the Democrats are the bul of the votes for the worst aspects of this bill.
