So why wasn't the Dutch ship similarly equipped? Strikes me as foolish to get close to any point on the African continent without suitable armament.

But don't worry, under the Law of the Sea Treaty, won't all armaments on ships be outlawed? Then, by the logic of gun control, the pirates won't be allowed to carry guns either.
