Thompson Grabs Lead In N.C. Primary Poll

Posted: Jun. 7 1:22 p.m. Updated: Jun. 7 6:52 p.m.

Raleigh — North Carolina voters apparently want to put another actor in the White House.

According to a recent survey, Fred Thompson, a former U.S. senator from Tennessee who hasn't officially entered the presidential race, has jumped into the lead in the North Carolina Republican primary.

The survey, released by Public Policy Polling, shows 37 percent of likely Republican primary voters would vote for Thompson, who has gained fame in recent years playing a New York district attorney on the television show "Law & Order."

Thompson's showing is a 12 percent increase from a similar survey in May.

I’m amazed, by the people who find Thompson’s rise amazing.

The three RINOs were never good choices.

Duncan, Tom, and Fred. Can they manage to to drive the Rino’s out or will they split the vote? I truly do not know

Yeah, they’ll spilt the vote, 67% for Fred Thompson, 3% for Duncan Hunter and 1% for Tom Tancredo, and the rest will be wasted on Rudy McRomney.

Look, I am great fans of all three of these men (Thompson, Hunter and Tancredo, not the other three). All might well be great Presidents. But only one of them is really electable. The two unelectable ones will eventually stand aside.

Thompson WILL be the nominee.

Frederick Dalton Thompson, 65, lawyer, lobbyist, ex-senator (R-TN), former movie actor (Hunt for Red October) and TV co-star (Law and Order), has said that he will soon announce his intention to make a try for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.
How formidable a candidate Thompson is believed to be is evidenced by the reaction of political strategists who are scattering in all directions like cockroaches caught in the middle of the night when the kitchen light is turned on.
Thompson arguably won the Republican presidential debate of June 5th in Manchester NH even though he was not there.
In a separate appearance on FOX the same night on which the debate was held, Thompson, whose wife is a political strategists, was a smashing hit while the declared candidates on stage repeated the same old same old.
Thompson showed a refreshing habit of answering questions directly without equivocation, evasion or dancing around the block.
Politics 101 has taught us to expect that a politician will seldom answer a yes or no question with a yes or no.
Instead, the drill is to answer with a long convoluted explanation of his or her non-answer.
For example, a typical politician will answer the question, “Are you in favor of border control?” with a speech about how this country was built by immigrants. (It was not. America was built by pioneers, explorers and settlers.)
To the question “As President would you pardon Lewis “Scooter” Libby?” Thompson promptly answered, “Yes, yes I would.” And then went on to explain his answer.
(Libby, Vice President Cheney’s former Chief of Staff, was recently sentenced to 30 months in prison and a $250,000 fine for lying to federal investigators about his role in the Valerie Plame CIA outing.)
Asked, “Do you support President Bush going into Iraq?” Thompson said, “Yes, and we should think about where we would be if we had not taken Saddam out.”
In answer to questions about taxes and social security, Thompson said that “Yes, tax codes needed to be completely overhauled,” and “Yes, entitlements are bankrupting the country.”
Thompson’s propensity to directly answer questions is surely a defining moment in political debate. Such a momentous change will no doubt disconcert Thompson’s contemporaries and dismay his political opponents.
For an actor Thompson is not very articulate. But his appearance and manner are pleasant, relaxed and friendly. He speaks with confidence and his voice is down-homey with a slight southern lilt and cadence in his speech.
These are the same personality and vocal traits that made such successful southern politicians as Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton so appealing to the masses.
The broad “Bastan” Bramin accent of Romney or Kerry, the harsh mid-western nasal twang of Hillary Clinton, or the Brooklynese of Giuliani, all delivered as if the speakers were addressing their inferiors, will suffer by comparison.
Thompson made it crystal clear in a brief interview exactly where he stands on immigration, abortion, cutting taxes, the war on terrorism, his commitment to Constitutional principles and to traditional American values. Voters will have no trouble deciding for or against Thompson.
My prediction is that Fred Thompson, son of a used car salesman, born in Alabama and raised in Tennessee, will be a serious contender for nomination to the office he once said he did not want.
