You can’t make up this kind of stuff. John Edwards is trying to get to the left of Dennis Kucinich (who wants to replace the Department of Defense with a “Department of Peace”) by proposing that we “fight” a nonexistent war on imaginary terrorists by creating a peace corps.
10,000 strong! There will be no stopping them.
Senator Edwards is outlining a new national security strategy that hinges on the creation of a 10,000-person civilian peace corps to stem the tide of terrorism in weak and unstable countries.
Prediction: the Nutroots are gonna love it.

How many people will volunteer to go to some of these countries? Some countries such as Saudi Arabia or Afghanistan or Pakistan may not even allow peace corp type volunteers to go there.
Edwards and lotsa Dems. think we can just talk and talk about things and eventually terrorism will be defeated.

I can see our college age kids and those fresh out of college going overseas to fight terrorists with a smile and not much more. Giving up that other job they trained for. Right, John. Maybe Gen. John should lead them at the front of the column.

This is the “Peace Corps Pretension”. They think they actually do something other than waste the taxpayers money. They don’t keep the peace and when war comes (El Salvador 1980) they get the hell out (to El Salvador’s benefit).
The Peace Corps has now had four and a half decades of waste so this fella wants to expand it.
When it was new, the Corps caused a riot in Nigeria because one of its volunteers describe “squalor” in a post card to be sent back home. That was just the beginning of its insults to host countries. The very nature of it insults the pride of the host country. In a statistically poor country like Honduras there is usually a labor surplus. So there is no need for this “roll up the sleeves” good deed doing. But United Fruit and other companies can do some good by giving jobs to large numbers of LOCAL people.
Former President Eisenhower described the PC as “a juvenile experiment”.
