Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper is one of hundreds of mayors in the United States lobbing Congress to help police get more information on gun dealers. The mayors want to halt a 4-year-old amendment they claim blocks law enforcement from getting crucial information about deadly weapons.
Hickenlooper and other mayors appear in commercials as part of a media campaign on the issue.
"There's not a city in this country, large or small, that isn't seriously effected by the rise in gun violence," Hickenlooper said in one commercial.
The 225 mayors also sent an open letter to Congress about illegal guns.
"We don't want to take guns away from hunters," Hickenlooper said. "You know, I learned to shoot when I was about 10. We don't want to take guns away from sportsmen."
The mayors are battling against the Tiahrt amendment, named after Rep. Todd Tiahrt of Kansas. He sponsored the legislation that restricts local police access to a federal gun trace database collected by the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms.
The mayors say the law prevents a global view of where guns come from and prevents police from pinpointing illegal gun dealers.
"This is something we can solve and if people work together we can dramatically reduce violent crime in this country," Hickenlooper said in one ad.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City and Mayor Thomas Menino of Boston are leading the campaign. It is backed by 33 national and state police groups, as well as the American Hunters and Shooters Association.
The Tiahrt amendment took effect in 2003. Supporters say it protects gun owners' Constitutional right to bear arms and shields the identity of undercover officers.

The Tiahrt Amendment is designed to make police investigations into gun crimes confidential. Bloomberg, Hickenlooper and their ilk want to jeopardize the cops so they can grandstand in front of the cameras. Their push to repeal the Tiahrt Amendment has nothing to do with enhancing law enforcement work. In fact, just the opposite.

"There's not a city in this country, large or small, that isn't seriously effected by the rise in gun violence,"I thought it was just the opposite: that crime was down across the U.S. due to CC. Anyone got the stats for either side? Please post.

Could the increase in Illegals have something to do with the rising crime? Of course not. Just go after law abiding citizens. That always works.

Kerry pulled that "sportsman" crap. No gun owner or hunter believed him. The politicians like Bloomberg and Hickenlooper hate the folks who own guns. Like a disease. What they're doing has nothing to do with keeping illegal guns off the streets and every thing to do with driving gun shops out of business. That's why they're invested in repealing the Tiahrt Amendment.

“There’s not a city in this country, large or small, that isn’t seriously effected by the rise in gun violence,” Hickenlooper said in one commercial.
And in Denver, the sanctuary city, where the mayor’s business hired an illegal alien who shot two police officers, one fatally, gun violence oftentimes is perpetrated by those he is happy to protect.
Our business was robbed 8 times in 3 weeks in Denver, and we are expected to sit idly by while he spouts platitudes.

God, what Bullshirt. Why does a city cop need a global view? Whatever that is...

I didn't want to migrate the illegal immigrant subject into this one, but I'll admit to thinking the same thing. These Mayors, and other politicians are very revealing of their true agenda in the way they refuse to deal with actual lawbreakers, and yet persecute a largely law abiding segment of society.

The real reason of the 2nd Amendment is to deal with would-be bastard tyrants like Higgenlooper, and Bloomberg. This “sportsman” sure wishes there would be a season on them.

As a former cop, all criminal investigations are confidential. And as a FFL, I have cooperated with LE when asked,in writing, for records of all [in this particular case] Glock .40 Cal hand guns I sold between certain dates. The crime revolved around a man who was driving in NY State, and was a subject of road rage. When the victim pulled over and stopped, the perpetrator got out his car and killed the victim. Still unsolved and was on AMW several times.
