OAKDALE, Calif. - On a warm May weekend in this Central Valley town, the irony was thick.

As usual, the annual Chocolate Festival was drawing hordes of fun-seekers. But Hershey Co., Oakdale's biggest employer and the nation's biggest candy company, is closing its plant here, eliminating all 575 jobs. The company will open a factory in Monterrey, Mexico, to handle the production.

The company sees lucrative markets in places such as China...

... where diethylene glycol is a cheap alternative to sugar. Enjoy your Hershey Kisses of death!

Hershey's chocolate was ok, but there are better products out there.

Trader Joe's sells this stuff, and it's pretty amazing.

” Richard H. Lenny told a meeting of market analysts in February, saying labor costs in Mexico are 10 percent less than in the United States.”

Bet its a hell of a lot more than 10 percent their saving on labor costs. Millions of mexicans do NOT flock to our country in hopes of a 10% increase in their wages.

I, personally , will NOT buy another hershey product.

If they keep on sending jobs to Mexico why do we still get the illegals from Mexico. I thought they are doing the jobs Americans wont do so why do our jobs leave and they come here??????

Hersheys is NOT the best chocolate you can buy...it’s just run of the mill stuff, IMHO....

And now we know where the phrase....

"Hershey squirts" came from.

It was just ahead of it's time.

Not that my buying power will make an impact....but you are now off the list.

Butt heads!

mmmmmmm, chocolate. That little cake (on the bottom left) with melted chocolate being drizzled on it looks delicious.

Once Hershey's moves to mexico, I'll never buy another one of their candy bars. We give them lot of business.

Why do you feel that way. Seems silly for a Conservative. Do you think you own private businesses. If you want to keep business in the USA then you must quit putting onerous burdens on them. They are fee to flee. After all we are not a police state YET. If you owned a company would you not also leave. Give me a break. Tax and regulate a business to death as we are doing and you get what you deserve. Add to that our sue free people and there flows business out of the country. Same as any Socialist hell hole.

Asked about the negative publicity that would come with the plant closures, he said the decisions were "gut-wrenchingly difficult - but in the best interests of the business."

Darn! No more Hershey anything for me and mine. Gawd, I'm going to miss my Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. No more chocolate bars. No Kit Kats. No more PayDays. No more chocolate Kisses. Wait, I never liked the Kisses anyway. Nothing with the Hershey name on it. Nada. Zip. Zero.

Crazy. Last month they closed their last Canadian plant as well.

They are moving operations to China also. Sure, that makes it cheap, but not safe.
