An email to Senator Lieberman Regarding S.1348(Amnesty Bill)

Posted on 06/10/2007 2:51:59 PM PDT by Man50D

I just sent an email to Senator Lieberman expressing my disgust for his support of S.1348 (Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007). I hope you enjoy it and inspires others to write. Although judging from the response from last week not many need to be inspired. Below is the content of the letter:

Senator Lieberman

As you are well aware there has been much discussion about Senate bill S.1348 (Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007). I am strongly opposed to this bill. Although nowhere in the bill does it mention amnesty specifically, the wording is such that the result is amnesty. No reasonable American could interpret it any other way.

This legislation or any other related immigration reform is pointless. We have existing immigration laws. It is incumbent upon Congress and the President to enforce our current immigration laws. The problem is Congress and President Bush have failed, either due to incompetence or by design, to enforce these laws. Creating more immigration legislation is a veiled attempt to weaken our existing immigration laws. The American people are not buying it based on public reaction this past week. They won't buy it in the future if the bill is revised in any other form.

You based your reelection on strong national security and fighting the war against terrorism as the paramount issues. Your support to fight terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan is negated by your support for S.1348 It is well documented any number of terrorists can easily enter through the Mexican border posing as illegal aliens with the goal to destroy our country. It is at least possible they are already here. Any legislation that will allow terrorists to remain in this country is not only reprehensible but will threaten the safety for all Americans. I am quite frankly disgusted with you supporting such legislation. Any member of either chamber who supports S.1348 is violating his or her oath to preserve, protect and defend our country.

I expect you to reconsider your position by opposing this bill should it be revisited. I will interpret any support by you for this bill as your preference to risk the safety of your fellow Americans for some political gain for yourself or your party. Do not send me some form letter/email stating how this bill is necessary in the name of national security. It will have the opposite effect. I can assure many people including myself will never forget if you take such a position.

Well stated. It is unfortunate that Lieberman has no concern for the future of this country. The pressure needs to be kept up after threats by Bush and several senators to keep pushing this bill.

PS. I saw some real shmuck on CNN this AM discussing how important this legislation is for our national security. I believe he was from the commerce dept. This is obviously how the WH hopes to jam this down our throats.

It’s the Executive Branch of our government to enforce the laws of the land, not Congress.

It’s too bad that you are so willing to hop on a bandwagon with a simple slogan - “amnesty”. It’s also too bad that you aren’t willing to look at what the bill actually does.
It’s not worth it to try to argue with people who like to join the popular position, but what you have done is convince me that you are very shallow indeed.

Vanity: Q for Legal Immigrants - How Much Does it Cost? post #41

Under the bill, an illegal alien must pay a $200 fine to apply for a Z visa which never expires; the $800 balance of the fine on installment; and an additional $4,000 fine if and only if they apply for a green card.

by angkor

I would add that the additional $4,000 "fine" is not really a 'fine', but just the actual fee for application. In fact, I would say all of the "fines" associated with this bill are really just fees and not fines at all. I think 'amnesty' fits the bill.

Vanity: Q for Legal Immigrants - How Much Does it Cost? post #44

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

I becams a naturalized American citizen in Portland, OR 1975, so the fees and costs were less then...

I was in the US military so I was eligible to become a citizen after three years from the date I entered the US...

I had to pay whatever the fees were then, pay for transportation and a stay overnight in a hotel twice to Portland in order to be at my apointments by 8-9 AM and also pay for the transportation and hotel costs for a witness not related to me..

The witness appeared before an immigration official in Dec 1974, one month before the naturalization ceremony, and swore in writing and personally that he had known me for the required number of YEARS that I was a moral and fit person to become an American citizen etc. (The background of the witness was checked also and he agreed to participate) I had to have TWO witnesses and my husband was the other (again the background check)..

At the first trip to Portland, I was examined for my knowledge etc on US history, and government, and my proffiency in the English language, (I had be able to speak, understand, read and write English) etc etc etc

The second trip was for the actual Naturaliztion ceremony which was one of the most important events of my life...and the most important to me as an American citizen..

It’s not just about the costs...

I believe Tripleplay was right when he said...

“it’s my understanding the “Z” visa gives them all the rights of an American except the the right to vote”

Which means the Z-Visa is a GREEN CARD..

BOTH allow a non-citizen to travel in and out of the country...When I had a Green Card I cound leave the US for up to one year, longer and I would have had to reapply to get back in...My Green Card status was scrutinized when I returned from a short trip to Western Europe...I dont think there is any limit on a Z-Visa.....

BOTH allow a non-citizen to work in the US at any job and join the military....except with a Green Card I could not work for the Govt (Post Office, Congress other Govt offices) I dont think Z-Visas disallow working in the Govt like Green Cards do...

BOTH give non-citizens ALL the rights and freedoms. privileges and protections that American citizens enjoy except voting privileges ...

Some BIG fat ol’ glaring differences...

A Green Card was issued to non-citizens (REAL immigrants) when they had been in the US for 90 days...The Z-Card is presented to the undeserving illegal aliens within ONE day...

A Green Card is issued to RA (Registered Aliens AKA REAL immigrants) who have applied for entry in the US, paid ALL fees (no time/installment -payments) passed background checks paid for by the applicant, health screenings by doctors working for the US Govt, paid for by the applicant(blood tests, xrays, medical histories, etc) any and all required shots, paid for by the applicant, etc etc, and who have been accepted for immigration, and then entered the US when the US said to and not before...

A Z-Visa would be issued to any and all IA (illegal aliens) who decided to sneak into the US without permission..and without all the usual immigration requirements

A Green Card is not a step to citizenship but a path in that an inmmigrant who is qualified for a Green card is also qualified for citizenship...that’s why a Green card is so important...only something substantial would stop the automatic path to citizenship...

A Green card holder (RA) must go through all the checks and pay all the fees before they enter the US and enjoy living in the US...A Z-Visa holder (IA) enjoys living in the US without all thechecks and fees...

A Green Card holder respects US laws and waits in line until he receives permission to enter...A Z-Visa holder (IA) could care less about US laws and just criminally enters and then demands the laws be changed to accomodate him...and is give a pass and a Z-Visa...

etc etc etc ...

No, that's wrong. The bill says that illegal immigrants can apply for a Z visa. They have to pay part of the fine when they apply, and then they will get probationary status. If they can prove that they have been employed for a certain amount of time, have no legal problems and no ties to terrorists, they can be approved for a Z visa. That only allows them to work here. They can't collect any welfare benefits, nor can they bring in family members.
After a period of time, maybe 10 years, depending on immigration quotas from their home country, they could qualify for a green card.

From what I can tell, the Z Visa is functionally similar to a green card.

In any case, once they've become 'legal,' and if all they're really interested in is working, why pony up the extra dough for the green card if a Z visa give you want you want?

The point is, even if they paid the full "fine," which I doubt many will, it still looks cheaper than coming in legally - so in essence it's amnesty.

Did you know that Swiss citizenship used to cost one million? I don't know what it is now, it may be more or less. 5 thousand is dirt cheap, I would like to think US citizenship is more valuable than that, but apparently Congress doesn't think so.

You’re listening to the hysteria. The Z visa is more like a guest worker permit than a green card.
The Z visa is only good for a few years (I think 4), and you have to pay to renew it. There is a maximum number of renewals - I think 3. All it gets is the right to work and live here. No welfare programs, and no right to bring in family members.
You are right that many would not go beyond that. Many would find that working here for 12 years would get them enough money to retire in their home country, and they would do just that.
That’s why so many retired Americans live in places like Mexico and Costa Rico - you can live well there for not much money.

It's too bad you don't realize this bill or any other immigration legislation is unnecessary. The illegal immigration problem would never had occurred if Congress and President Bush made sure ICE strictly enforced existing immigration laws. Passing more laws will only result in more laws not being enforced. This bill is a sham.

I guess you’re not aware that current laws give employers almost no way to check immigration status, and just a slap on the wrist if they hire illegals knowingly.
Liberals like the laws the way they are, and they’re delighted that so many “conservatives” are willing to serve as useful idiots.
