Why was Paris Hilton released? (Sheriff 'favoritism'???)
Herald Sun ^ | 11 June 2007

PARIS Hilton's billionaire grandfather donated money to the election campaign of the sheriff who released the 26-year-old American hotel heiress from jail, it has been revealed.

The contribution from William Barron Hilton, 78, co-chairman of the Hilton Hotel chain, to Sheriff Lee Baca's re-election campaign is revealed in financial records.

A friend of the Hilton family said the temporary release of the heiress last week may have been a "quid pro quo".

"A member of her family has been a contributor to Baca's campaign and this may have been payback time," the friend said.

"Her entourage initially were confident she would be out of jail in a few days."

Mr Baca, who has faced heavy criticism for attempting to overrule the judge in the case, has in the past been accused of favouritism towards the Hollywood elite.

He was the officer who failed to report actor Mel Gibson's anti-Semitic tirade after the star was arrested for drink-driving.

Gibson had filmed television advertisements for one of Sheriff Baca's pet causes - an education fund for policemen's children.

Celebrities including Sylvester Stallone and Dustin Hoffman have also backed Mr Baca's election campaigns since 1998.

Or maybe he wanted to avoid offending one of his contributors. He does seem to like those “gifts”.

I think you have it right. It has got to be an enormous extra taxpayer cost and effort to keep this brat locked up, to keep guards from sneaking in their digital cameras to get a money shot, to keep the news rats away from the front gates, to make sure the brat doesn’t do something stupid like cutting her wrists, etc. Sounds to me like the sheriff is one of the few sensible people involved in this mess, with the balls to do something sensible.

I think it was both. They reminded him who contributed to his election, and they threatened him with a resource-consuming lawsuit, or at least a hint of it. He folded like a cheap lawn chair.

Good thing the judge handed him his hiney!

Oh yeah— it sure takes “balls” to capitulate to the tantrums of a spoiled brat. I guess that makes Hilton’s parents the “ballsiest” parents in the world. There are certainly “regular” inmates on suicide watch. If they can take those precautions with other prisoners, they can take them with her. If he didn’t like the trouble, he should have shipped off to the mental facility in the first place, not her home.

Supposedly the jail is overcrowded and people are being released early every day. Maybe he figured better her on the streets rather than someone more dangerous?

Doesn't wash... There is a a separate wing, called "the special needs" unit, for police officers, politicos, and celebrities, in the LA County lockup. This was where she was placed (rightly so, in my opinion, so don't get me wrong). While she was there, she had a cell to herself, so the issue was *not* overcrowding...

The Jail is overcrowded...but dont let that stop ya.

the latest

TMZ has learned that Paris Hilton suffers from extreme Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and claustrophobia, and these conditions may have triggered the Sheriff’s decision to spring her from Lynwood Jail last week.

We’re told Hilton is taking Adderall for her ADD. Although our sources were not specific, we’re told Hilton was not receiving all of her medications at Lynwood. As a result, Hilton was having severe panic attacks in jail. There were times she was so debilitated, she could not push the panic button in her cell.

As for how she’s doing today, she’s depressed but not really crying. She has a pencil and a pad of paper and she’s spending her time writing down her thoughts. We’re also told she’s losing weight — although she’s no Nicole Richie.

Paris Hilton is a valuable asset to the US economy. Why destroy the asset to prove a point? A Pyrrhic victory at best. It would be like Ireland throwing Bono to 10 years in jail for smoking pot, if he did and was caught.

It takes balls to face the obvious feral mob intent on ripping the little girl apart.

!. In a free and “small d” democratic society, sheriffs don’t make law enforcement decisions based on one’s worth to the U.S. economy. If we did, every violent gagnsta rapper in the country would have free reign.

2. Even if that were a reason, she’ll probably make more money and be a hotter commodity after her stint, than ever before. Hilton’s money-making ability is based solely on her status as publicity whore. When has she ever generated such media attention? And, for the record, I don’t have a problem with her making money off of this. If people are stupid if enough to pay for it, let them part with their money.

3. She is not a “little girl”. She is a grown woman and it is about time she started acting like one. When I was her age, I certainly wasn’t crying for my “mommy” to help me out of scrapes. On the contrary, I was “mommy”, kissing the scrapes of toddlers.

4. I hardly consider 3 weeks in a private cell, with meals, a private toilet and air conditioning to be “ripping” her apart. You might want to talk to “little girls” at Walter Reed about being “ripped apart.”

5. I does not take “balls” to let a rich, whiny, celebutante go. It takes a severe case of celebrity sycophancy and/or fill-my-campaign-coffersitis.
