The Buzz: Tempers boiled over as the bills flew
Sacramento Bee ^ | 6/11/7 | Steve Wiegand

As the workdays grew long in the Legislature last week in the rush to meet a deadline to move bills from one house to the other, the tempers of our elected officials sometimes grew short.

In the Assembly for example, Todd Spitzer, R-Orange, rose to a point of personal privilege when a Democrat mentioned his name, only to be told that mentioning a colleague by name was not a hanging offense under Assembly rules.

In the Senate, Tom McClintock, R-Thousand Oaks, rattled off a string of rhetorical questions about a bill written by Darrell Steinberg, all of which began with the phrase "Who the hell are you to. ..."

This led Carole Migden, D-S.F., to demand a formal apology from McClintock for using profanity. Then there was a discussion on whether "hell" was indeed profanity. Then, Sheila Kuehl, D-Santa Monica, said the real issue was "comity" on the floor, which doubtless sent some senators scurrying to their dictionaries.

In the end, McClintock sort of apologized, and Steinberg said he was just glad that he had provoked a robust debate, which, as a new member, he had sometimes found lacking in the Senate.

It was hard to tell if his tongue was in his cheek.

A Democrat from San Francisco considers "Hell" profanity? Boy! Is SHE ever out of touch with her constituency.

>> A Democrat from San Francisco considers “Hell” profanity?

She’s the Lesbian legislator who, while driving her State-furnished SUV too fast under the influence and dialing her cellphone, hit a citizen... and demanded deference because she is ELITE AND IMPORTANT, unlike the “ordinary” citizen.

In that case, she was more “in touch” with her consituent than the constituent would’ve liked.

Maybe I’m missing something here or don’t know what goes on in our Congress, but can House members argue in the Senate Chambers? If not, then this is surely sloppy reporting and editing.

Aren’t you just sick of these twits, except for Senator McClintock who isn’t a twit by any means?

This just shows you this has nothing to do with the peoples business. And when someone who really cares to do the work, there are those who turn it all around.

I say enough is enough. Throw the baby bumbs out.
