They are already on that one. Just google “endangered soils”.

>> I think you might have been thinking of sick, older trees. So, there was some truth there.

You’re being kind. I wasn’t thinking of older trees... problem is, I wasn’t thinking *at all*! :-)

What ever happened to the rain forests?
They were supposed to have been completely gone by now.

dihydrogen monoxide is a very dangerous substance! Thousands die from it every year. It must be BANNED!

"Trees produce CO2..."

Living trees take in CO2 and produce oxygen. Dead trees that are decomposing produce CO2.

Umm, yes and no. Immature trees consume more CO2 than they produce, mature trees produce more CO2 than they consume. Just as there’s an optimal time in its life to slaughter a steer or a pig or a chicken, so there is with a tree.

Trees produce CO2, the most “noxious” greenhouse gas!

Um, no. Trees eat CO2 and release oxygen. Back to third grade science with you!

Actually, they do both. Plants consume CO2 & produce O2 during daylight hours, especially during growth phases, but they also carry out cellular respiration (which consumes O2 and produces CO2) at a much lower rate 24 hours a day.

Back many years ago when I took biology, I was told that plants emit O2 during the daytime photosynthesis process. During the night, in the dark, they actually emit CO2, but in lower quantities. I hope my memory is serving me correctly here. This is why there was an “old wives tale” that said you shouldn’t sleep in closed rooms full of plants.

Hope this helps.

Almost all the old mills are gone and replaced with smaller ones that can't process the larger logs of old growth. The emphasis has been on smaller logs and making it profitable. Take a good look at standard 2X4, 2X6, 2X8 end grain and you'll see the annular rings are very curved, meaning the radius is short, meaning a small diameter tree.

The days of nice, straight grain structural lumber is long gone and if you want it, it is almost always custom order from only a few mills left here in Oregon. To get the quality. of timber and hardwood for the new house, we cut and milled trees from our ranch. We have quality timber that builders haven't seen in years.

I've been offered incredible cash prices for some of the black oak we milled for our flooring. No sale.

“There’s a place called the rainforest; it truly sucks a**.
Let’s knock it all down and get rid of it fast.
You say, “Save the rainforest,” but what do you know?
You’ve never been to the rainforest before.
Getting Gay With Kids is here!
To tell you things you might not like to hear.
You only fight these causes ‘cause caring sells.
All you activists can go f*** yourselves!
Someday if we work hard, boys and girls,
There’ll be no more rainforests left in the entire world!
Getting Gay With Kids is here!
To spread the word and bring you cheer. Yeah!
Getting Gay With Kids is here!
Let’s knock down the rainforest! What do you say?!
It’s totally gay! It’s totally gay!”

“Each year, the Rainforest is responsible for over three thousand deaths from accidents, attacks or illnesses. There are over seven hundred things in the Rainforest that cause cancer. Join the fight now and help stop the Rainforest before it’s too late.”

I never heard that one.

I did hear the old wives tale that you shouldn’t sleep in a closed room with a cat. The cat would take your breath away.

I think there was a Twilight Zone or Outer limits written about that tale.

Also other once important issues such as DDT and smog are on the back burner. Don’t hear much about the ozone hole either. They are clearly flocking to the path with the greatest financial gradient.

How about that Bird Flu? I guess those millions of people dropping dead just failed to make the nightly news.
