Of the Geneva Conventions, "Torture Bans," and Murdered Soldiers

On May 12, near the Sunni stronghold of Yusufiya, Iraq (about 15 miles south of Baghdad), al Qaeda fighters ambushed a coalition patrol, killing four soldiers and abducting three, all from the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team (based at Fort Drum, New York).

Despite warnings from al Qaeda “not to look for the soldiers if [they] wanted them back alive,” American and Iraqi forces mobilized almost 4,000 troops to conduct a search for the missing men. The force spent much of the next weeks searching the area around Mahmoudiya, in the much-publicized “Triangle of Death.” Though they questioned over 450 people and detained 11 as a part of the probe, the soldiers were, unfortunately, not successfully recovered.

Al Queada hasn't figured out that if they abduct a soldier, it is great justification for more patrols in that area, finding more weapons caches and caching more terrorists.

Oh, and don't tell Senator Reid or Congresswoman Pelosi there are any Al Queada in Iraq as they don't want to know.

President Bush should have been doing a better job of showing the American public that we fight in a civilized manner, and that our enemies fight in an uncivilized manner.

The video of the attacks on 9/11 should be shown often. I might even suggest that the murders of Daniel Pearl and Nick Berg should be shown on TV. There should be no doubt: We more cleanly than any nation has ever fought, while they fight as dirty as they possibly can.

The American people do not seem to know this. The reason for that is the American media and the Democrats work hard to portray us as the bad guys.

Bush needs to go on the attack -- against the US media and against the Democrats.

His new tone has caused more damage than he can imagine.

Dittoes - it seems that no matter what happens, our military is at fault and the barbarian scum we fight is just a “misunderstood” group that will quit chopping peoples’ heads off if we would just sing “We are the World”. We need to unleash our brave warriors and let them do their jobs to annihilate ( I think I spelled that wrong...) the enemy.
The MSM, the Bush Administration and everyone else who has helped facilitate this should be ashamed of themselves!

Sure they have! They have also figured out that kidnapping soldiers requires a huge diversion of US Army resources to finding them, enhances their prestige, and may even eventually put them on a level playing field with the USA when it comes times to trade POWs.

Expect to see more of this tactic. This has been written about just recently at the Global Guerrillas web site, which is run by the author of Brave New War. The author is a former DOD employee as well as a vet, and his insights are fascinating.

Major in History and Minor in Political Science. The International Coventions regarding WAR can be traced back to the Knights Code of Honor and then the 16th Century when Grotius codified such things as the terretorial limits vis a vis the sea, (then the coastal boundrey was measured by the flight of a cannon ball).

The Geneva Convention came about because of the technological developments of the WWI plus other issues, (electronic communications intercepts) and SPIES!

Combatants wore uniforms and if not wearing uniforms or they were identified by a military ID, (name rank and serial number) or were SPIES.

Spies, when identified were offered the option:

"Speak or Die!

Al Queda should be offered the same option. Not torture. Rope or Bullet will suffice! Speedy and Cost efficient. The American Taliban rotting in jail eating and sleeping and breathing at my expense should have been hung!

Happy Tuesday.
