wealthy haoles (a derogatory term for foreigners)

No, it's an anti-white slur used by Hawaiian racists to describe American citizens as well as foreigners.

While in Hilo last year, I found the people open and loving. While some are impoverished, by our standards, they are happy. The joy in their lives is called “the breath of life”.

When the first sailors landed, the people found them to be very stern, “without the breath of life” or, in their language, haole.

We have required them to need us, our money and possessions. Some resist, just as the Native Americans did. They want to lead their lives just as true conservatives do, without government intervention, and on our own terms.
