GOP Senate Leaders McConnell & Lott on verge of deal to bring amnesty back up for vote
Numbers USA email | June 12, 2007 | Roy Beck - Numbers USA

Friends,

Pres. Bush's meeting with Republican Senators at noon appears to be providing just the extra push that pro-amnesty leaders have wanted.

The Senate's top two Republican leaders -- McConnell (R-Ky.) and Lott (R-Miss.) -- are using this opportunity to pull 15 Republicans (of the 38 who voted against amnesty last week) back to Pres. Bush's side.

McConnell and Lott hope to get those 15 to sign off on a list of amendments they want brought up for a vote.

They hope to present that list to Democratic leader Sen. Reid (D-Nev.) by tonight!

To slow this down, please phone Republican Senators on the list below THIS MINUTE.

202-224-3121

When you think about it, the deal that Mcconnell and Lott are offering makes little sense. They are basically saying that they want the 15 Republican Senators to agree to vote for cloture in exchange for a chance to have their favorite amendments voted down.

Many of those same Senators may vote against the final bill (when it will take 50 votes to defeat it), but their promise to Bush, McConnell and Lott will be that they will vote FOR cloture (when it would take only 39 votes to defeat it).

In other words, they will vote for the amnesty in the tally where their NO vote would have the most possibility of defeating the bill.

Please call these Republicans and urge them to refuse any deal that wins their YES vote on another cloture vote.

REPUBLICANS MOST LIKELY TO SWITCH TO AMNESTY TODAY (* Senators up for re-election in 2008)

* Alexander (R-TN) Bennett (R-UT) * Cochran (R-MS) * Coleman (R-MN) * Collins (R-ME) * Cornyn (R-TX) * Craig (R-ID) * Domenici (R-NM) Gregg (R-NH) Hatch (R-UT) Hutchison (R-TX) Kyl (R-AZ) Lott (R-MS) * McConnell (R-KY) Murkowski (R-AK) * Smith (R-OR) Snow! e (R-ME) Stevens (R-AK) * Warner (R-VA)

Bush must have opened the pork floodgates.

Not that he really even needs a special occasion to print more money that we don't have.

“Lott’s the one who basically threw a hissy-fit and said if they couldn’t pass this bill they might as well dissolve congress and all go home.”

I’ve NEVER liked that guy. Smells of phony politician even over the tube.

Bush has sold out his base - but worse, he’s sold out his country. If he’s so morally compelled to help the plight of the poor Mexican illegals, let him resign his job (which is to protect OUR country), go down the Mexico with a hammer, and join the Jimmy Carter do-good brigade. >:-\

go to your relatives and friends and ask every one to opt out of tax withholding. Tell these idiots they can find a way to deport the illegals or to jail us all instead.

I phoned the first week, but I could feel myself getting so frustrated, I was worried I’d lose my temper. I DON’T want to sound like some hysterical nut job. But I’ll get back on the phones this week. For all the good it will do.

the amendment gambit is a bait and switch to get the bill vooted on as is. We’ve already seen how amendments that would fix the bill are shot down by the idiots supporting it.

go to your relatives and friends and ask every one to opt out of tax withholding.

It will take millions of us doing something like that to make them pay attention. I've always believed American government was best because we didn't have to resort to violence or demonstrations to make a difference. If this bill passes, we are a permanent minority and nothing we do will ever matter again. Honestly, I am becoming so angry -- I can't remember EVER being this angry about a political issue in my whole life. If Hillary and the Dems were doing this, you'd at least expect it from people who hate America and hate the conservatives. But from people who are supposed to be on our side? And love this country?

Think so? Think these politicians are dumb enough to think that voting for cracked-open borders and amnesty will actually help their election chances?

Remind them it won’t.

I just got through to Cornyn and his aid said the Senator is steadfast on opposition to this bill and will not vote for it.

That is good. But maybe not good enough. He must not only vote against the bill, he must vote against cloture. Hopefully, he has told McConnell and Lott that they will not get his vote for cloture...because if this bill comes up for a vote, it will pass. And that will be a disaster for Americans.

“So, who is spinning?”

There’s a lot in the current Senate bill that just duplicates existing law, like the fence.

It’s part of Bush’s deception in selling this bill.
