But I will say that I want to see Fred in debates and to get his positions out there explicitly and clearly before I decide that he would be better than any of the current running candidates.

The verdict is still out on whether Thompson's current campaign strategy is "smart" or "lazy." But at any rate he will eventually have to get out into the trenches with the rest of the pack. He will eventually have to prepare for a debate, make appearances, etc.

My guess is that his body simply won't hold up to those demands. He already looks old beyond his years. Standing alongside someone young and vibrant (Romney!) will only make this all the more obvious.

am also very uncomfortable with the amount of the IMO, seemingly blind following of Mitt...especially so amongst some FReepers. Strangely...I think many are willing to vote for him...because he looks nice, and has a seemingly strong marriage or based solely on his Mormonism.

I have not had the same experience. I was on three Fred threads and they were two too many. Too much hype, cheerleading and personal attacks as you can see on this thread. The Romney threads have been a welcome relief. I've found thoughtful people with great insights and resources. They are a solid bunch.

Not unlike my mother voting for Slick Clinton...cause “He looks and sounds nice”...”

I won’t speak to the general populace, but Romney-supporting FReepers have some very sound reasons to support Romney - as sound as the reasons held by supporters of any other candidate out there. Ask them, they’ll tell you.

All that notwithstanding, we are in the mass media age. Being telegenic IS a factor that must be considered, whether we like it or not, particularly in the general election. Giuliani and Romney both have that strength.

The quote is inaccurate. It is not a quote, but a shabby paraphrase.

I will give you some.....but not ALL FReepers. If you are saying ALL FReepers...you are mistaken. Plain and simple.

I understand that....Lincoln couldn't be elected today...as probably a good percentage of past presidents couldn't. Unfortunate...but alas true.

Looks, presence, speech delivery, mean too much today...And that's reality. Don't make it right though...and my previous post stands.

He gave the impression he was not planning to participate in the primary debates.

He gave no such impression.

Produce a quote where I have lied or retract.

At the very best, you did not provide the whole quote and truncated it to the point where the meaning was changed. I remember him saying most of those words but they were in the context of the participants having to raise their hands to speak. He said nothing about not participating in future debates.

Another “Mitt is a hottie!” characterization from the vapidly shallow Romney camp.

You implied that I lied regularly by stating "what else is new". So again, if you believe I have lied before produce a quote or apologize. I am confident my current quote is accurate but I have removed it until I confirm it a second time. You can show some similar goodwill by responding to my point above.

How is the Romney camp shallow? We have an actual candidate with actual positions on issues.

Romney's Agenda

The fredheads have little more than old Paul Harvey radio skits as the source from which to divine their candidate's beliefs. LOL. Get a horse in the race, buddy, THEN we'll talk.

Awww, that’s cute.

But even you are smart enough to know I meant your tastes in candidates are shallow. You seem to disdain an aged face and prefer the perfect coif.

Bill Clinton had a GREAT coif.

They are one of the sincerest, nicest groups it has been my priviledge to work with, since I've been on FR.

You are exactly right.

And Fred nailed it. The style is demeaning and ridiculous.

Look where the poll was taken and tell me it has a lot of reverence since Texas and Kalifornia are now more important than Iowa and New Hamster.

The word was denigrate. Newt Gingrich was the one who used the term "demeaning."

Here's a transcript of the segment:

Jay: Do you think people are maybe more disenchanted with who's running and that's why you are rising? Do you think it's you because we don't really know where, people know you but not familiar with your positions.

Fred: Lot of time, lot of different ways, lot of different outlets to get your views and yourself out and I will avail myself if I (inaudible) and take the next step. I get some benefit from not having been one of, you know, ten people standing, sitting, you know, standing there at the debates and raising your hand and all the other things that kind of denigrate the office of the job. Uh, uh, so I recognize that, but on the other hand I been around for a while and I think people have a pretty good feel for who I am and they might not always agree with me but I think they know that I'm (inaudible) at a stage in my life now where I think about my country and the kind of country where my kids are going to grow up.

--------

So my quote stands corrected.

You're right, one small tagline can't do justice to these treasures:

1)We don't know if Fred is going to participate in the debates because he admits he benefits by not participating. The less people question him, the easier it is to maintain the fantasy.

2)Fred confirms that everything we know about him so far is true - Roe/abortion views, immigration, etc. We'll be happy to continue providing that information.

3)He left viewers with the impression that he is above the whole process. Somebody tell Fred the other ten guys had to get up there and participate in those denigrating debates along with candidates throughout our country's history. He is no better than they are.

Someone needs to tell Fred we are electing a President, not anointing a King.

Demean, v ~ to lower in status or character; to degrade

Fred may have used the word "denigrate" ( v ~ to blacken) but the debates are most certainly demeaning as well.

The future leader of the Free World needs to tell it like it is.
The debates are a media farce.

Would you get off your high horse and let Fred run his campaign. Geez, you are impossible. There are over 6 months before the first vote is cast in the primaries and over a year before the general election. There is more than enough time for you to learn what kind of toilet paper Fred wipes with, if you so desire. You just keep trying to make attack Fred because he is beating your candidate. Your continued lame attacks over your misquotes and assumptions are ridiculous. Fred will campaign and Fred will be in debates when the appropriate time comes. He never said he would not debate, despite your repeated claims. Some one needs to inform you that you have not been anointed queen over how we elect candidates and how campaigns are to be run.

No, the elitists and their groupies have made it quite clear I am a mere subject who oversteps my bounds in voicing an opinion. When will I learn?

Your continued lame attacks over your misquotes

I corrected my one misquote (which didn't alter the overall meaning either).

I have asked you repeatedly to either produce quotes where you claim I have lied or apologize. A decent person would do so.
