Romney Surges In Latest Republican Poll
WMUR9 ^ | June 12, 2007 | Staff Writer

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- A new poll shows that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has surged ahead of the pack in New Hampshire in the Republican presidential primary race.

The WMUR-CNN poll of 304 likely Republican voters shows Romney with 28 percent of the vote, an improvement from 17 percent in April. Rudy Giuliani and John McCain dropped to 20 percent each, down from 29 percent each in April.

Newcomer Fred Thompson, who is not yet officially in the race, was fourth, with 11 percent.

The University of New Hampshire Survey Center polled voters following last week's debate in New Hampshire. The survey has a 5.3 percent margin of error.

Pollster Andy Smith said that Romney is out-hustling the field with more visits to the Granite State, more ads and more campaign resources.

"They're working right now at the level that you'd see campaigns working at in the late fall," Smith said. And I think he's got a good, solid campaign in place, to the point now that he's leading among the Republican field."

Smith said that Thompson is having an interesting affect on the race. Some analysts thought that the conservative newcomer would erode Romney's support, but it appears Thompson is stealing support from McCain and Giuliani.

It’ll likely develop into a F. Thompson in the middle/south vs. Romney in some northern states.

Guiliani may win just a very few states, but Thompson has the master plan, IMHO.

Not much talk of VPs at this point. They could make a strong bet with the right combination...

But there’s a long... time... till next Summer.

It might be coolest if no one had enough votes on the first ballot and that translated into a Thompson/Romney ticket. (Or, do you say, Romney/Thompson?)

I think we have to see the three leaders stand side by side before we know how this thing is going to play out.

For whatever reason, this Romney guy just doesn’t do much for me. I don’t think he’s all that conservative.

I am really not sure what are Romney’s core beliefs; I’m not sure if he is either.

Given that I would Guiliani over Romney because at least he is a good administrator.

Right now I am hoping Thompson runs. If he doesn't I really don’t no who’ll get my vote.

Too early to say. Mary Matalin has been known to have driven a campaign or two into the ground. Ask George Allen.

Guess who wants it more! Go Romney!

I think Romney would be an excellent complement to Thompson on many levels. And, an excellent, dynamic salesman -- and I mean that very positively.

I don't think anyone but Allen can be blamed for setting foot in the snares he skipped into.

Yeap, ole Romney is doing great in northeastern liberal states. In the rest of the country, Romney is sucking eggs.

sure, but he could have recovered. But instead he spent the last month of the campaign running on a feminist platform at Mary Matalin’s advice.

I would expect New Englanders to do better in New England polls.
