Durham investigator doubted indictments
News and Observer ^ | Benjamin Niolet

Posted on 06/12/2007 8:17:46 PM PDT by SmoothTalker

"When one of the investigators in the Duke University lacrosse case learned that Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong intended to seek indictments against two players, the detective said, "With what?""

"Chief among the problems, the investigator testified, was that they couldn't prove Reade Seligmann was even at the party when an escort service dancer said she was raped by him.

"We didn't have any DNA. We didn't have him at the party," Himan testified. "It was a big concern to me to go for an indictment and not even know where he was, if he was even there. ... I didn't want to indict somebody that shouldn't have been indicted.""

"Himan testified the case against the lacrosse players had serious problems and Nifong knew from the start that it was likely not winnable. Their only witness -- the accuser -- was unreliable and had given conflicting stories."

""Mr. Nifong intentionally sought out the world's attention," State Bar prosecutor Katherine Jean said.

"When the world was focused squarely on North Carolina and its justice system, Mr. Nifong repeatedly and intentionally misled the media and therefore the public about a very serious case, caused racial unrest in Durham, intentionally concealed evidence to which he now admits the defendants were entitled to but which was extremely harmful to his theory of the case and made false representations to two judges in an effort to keep the defendant from discovering it.""

KC Johnson is covering the trial on his Durham in Wonderland blog. He reports that this investigator Mr. Himan described how Nifong recognized problems with Crystal’s story within days after she started this whole thing. According to Himan, Nifong said to him “You know we’re f*cked.”

He then went on and indicted the boys anyway.

No way does Nifong come out of this thing with his license.

“Terrible town, Durham. Corrupt and stupid in every department.”

I’m from NC. I can assure you that Durham is the armpit of the Triangle. Huge crime, plenty of drugs, some gangs thrown in for good measure, and horrible local leadership who play off of a poorly educated black community to get elected. The race card is common in Durham.

Mr. Nifong repeatedly and intentionally misled the media

How can anyone mislead the drive-by media? The mislead themselves most of the time.

White university students better learn from this experience. If they are smart, tell incoming classes to shun the town. In other words don’t go there, don’t patronize their businesses, donate to their charities, etc, etc, completely isolate the town. Anything in Durham is off limits. Students from Durham are off limits in study groups, grapevine info on upcoming tests, exams and etc.

I’m almost universally against captial punishment in cases where no one was killed. The only exception I would allow would be cases where government officials abuse their authority in a way that a) “shocks the conscience” and b) could have had severely negative consequences for any private individuals. Note that both conditions apply in this case.

2) Hang sc*mbag Nifong and the despicable Duke administration from the highest tree. Disbarrment, massive civil penalties, the whole shebang.

2) It is time to relocate Duke out of the utterly corrupt Durham sewer treatment plant, oops i meant metropolitan area.

“Are you sure you aren’t describing most towns in NJ??”

The funny thing is Duke is known around here as the University of Southern New Jersey.

I hate that characterization, but if you’re going to use it, try to at least get it right.

What he MEANT to say was, “... the University of New Jersey at Durham.”
