Why, oh why, did they pick the good name "Henrickson" to portray a Mormon polygamist?

Is this pastor Charles or elder Charles I'm addressing?

Just kidding. What's in a name? Don't worry about it. It's only fiction, although apparently hitting close to the truth.

And I can testify to the truth. We had a polygamist community compound a few miles from our house in Sandy, UT. And you could always tell them when seeing them in stores and restaurants; granny dresses, several women together with a bunch of tots. There was no mistaking the situation.

An employee's grandmother had later become the wife a polygamist. When he died, she was on her own but soon became the wife of another polygamist because she couldn't cope with life on her own...or so the story went from the employee.

There truly are parallel universes out there.

I am a Big Love addict, lol! I watched the first season and now just started the second.

Now, this doesn’t mean I have become supportive of polygamy, cause after watching it you can’t help but feel sorry for just about everyone of the characters. It truly is sad.

I have a mormon friend, but I think the mormons don’t like to acknowledge that their faithful former leaders had multiple wives and were all polygamist and didn’t believe you could get to the highest place of the celestial kingdom w/out having 3 or more wives.

It is called Denial!

Last night the ‘leader’ stated that they follow Mormonizm as it was received from Smith - with polygamous behavior originally included - he said something about how can polygamy be simply taken out of the original teaching - he has a point.

God may be OK with it, but it sure seems stressful to me. One would have to be a total hyper alpha male to even thing about that sort of life, plus lots of income really helps.

He does have a point, but LDS basically says that LDS Fundamentalist don’t have a point. I actually think the Mormon Fundamentalist are the ones who are truly Mormons, and not LDS. Scary stuff!

>>Women probably watch it more<<

Count this woman out. I HATE relationship shows. I even detest the squishy parts of 24.

Does anyone know about “Lost”? My niece gave me the boxed sets of the first two seasons. How are they?

Have you asked them how they get around that in their thinking about going to the highest place? Can they get there anyway?

So if one believes that Joseph Smith was truly a prophet of God, then maybe he has a point. On the other hand, the office of President, in Mormon theology and practice includes the mantle of the prophet and they are free to change pretty much anything they want to as a matter of continuing revelation.

I think both sides are wrong in this controversy.

Uh, to be clear, “President” (in post 28) refers to president of the church, not the office that Mitt aspires to.

Back are the domestic hassles and secret scandals of Utah's most popular polygamist family, which likely will cause more strife for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Beehive State's tourism bureau.

Whatever it does for the reputation of Mormonism, Big Love will more likely boost tourism to Utah, even though it isn't filmed there.

It's the same with The Sopranos: some New Jersey Italians may hate it, but that show actually attracted tourists to an unlikely corner of the Garden State.

Swedes, historically, have been Lutheran (as am I), not Mormon.

An awful lot of Danes and some Swedes were converted and emigrated to Utah. The Utah Historical Encylopedia says:

Denmark supplied more immigrants to Utah in the nineteenth century than any other country except Great Britain. Most of these Danes--nearly 17,000--were converts to the LDS Church, heeding an urgent millennialistic call to gather to "Zion."

and

The federal census of 1910 showed Utah's Swedish-born population at its peak, with 7,227. In that year, Swedish-Americans and their children in Utah numbered 17,063, or 4.6 percent of the state's population.

The Swedes came mostly from the area near Denmark.

Utah's most famous Swede was radical songwriter Joe Hill (born Joel Hägglund), not a Mormon.

I have not asked them, but I have been thinking about doing just that a lot lately.

And can they get there? I believe in we accept Jesus Christ is our Savior and died on the cross for our sins that we can get to Heaven. What LDS believes is way beyond anything I believe. It is pretty crazy to me actually.

Maybe you should go get your hair cut somewhere else. When she asks why you’re leaving her, tell her she’s too “exciting” for your tastes. ;-)

If "that show" got renewed, then HBO better bring back Rome and Deadwood.

This is a much cheaper show to produce, and since HBO can't jack up ad rates when they have a hit, they're more sensitive to cost issues. But the good news is that it's pretty much confirmed that a 4-hour "Deadwood" finale is in the pipeline, although I wouldn't expect it before 2009.

Seems God was okay with polygamy.

No wonder they call you bushwacker!

Seems to me like the fundamentalist Mormons who practice polygamy are following their Prophet Joseph Smith, and Prophet Brigham Young. Seems to, like it might be the mainstream Mormons who have apostatized.

Its a fascinating bit of American church and state history that the Mormons gave up polygamy in order to become a state of the union. A condition of statehood was that a ban on polygamy be written into the state constitution.

I love “Big Love”, I like a show that is well done and takes me into a world that I don’t ordinarily inhabit.

The LDS is portrayed as the staunch enemy of polygamy for those who haven’t seen the series and the polygamists live in constant fear of discovery by the LDS.

It was so hilarious when the husband was taking 3 - 4 Viagras a day to “keep up” with 3 wives!

I just break out the electric razor and shave my head every several months. Only costs pennies in electricity. I figure it looks better than the crap male haircuts today, anyhow. =8-0 ;-)
