Wow, nothing but Doom and Gloom. Looks like the only answer is to stop providing compassion, medicines and foods to places that aren't at 0 population growth so we don't put additional strains on natural resources. Either that or we need to start evacuating planet Earth.

Really? I read the title as a good thing. Like "woo hoo" no more dependence on religious zealot controled third world governments that only pretend to give a damn about us. I guess it's all in the perspective.

Of more interest to me was the report that the surge had failed and that 1 in 5 in the world have high speed Internet. Not being one of those privileged 20% I was unable to read the article you supposedly linked to.

The oil locked up in the oil shale and tar sands in eastern Utah, western Colorado, and northern Alberta dwarfs in size the crude oil reserves of Iran, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia. When the cost of a gallon of gasoline reaches about $5 a gallon, it will be economically feasible to exploit these reserves. That’s with current technology. As the technology improves, the economic break-even point will drop.

Besides the many petroleum products that can be separated directly and indirectly from it, it also an indispensible source of starter chemicals for various industries.

Oil is not going away anytime soon.

Folks, I remember when I was in graduate school in the early sixties it was predicted we would be out of oil by the year 2000. That is how much I believe this estimate.

They have played this same story dozens of times and yet periodically the geologists revise the amount of untapped reserves steadily upward.
