Mexican leader calls U.S. 'cynical' in fight against drugs

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Mexican Attorney General Eduardo Medina called U.S. policies on drugs and firearms "cynical" and "absurd," some of the toughest language used by Mexican officials prodding Washington to cut U.S. drug demand and stem the flow of guns they say fuel violence here.

"American law to me is absurd because people can easily acquire firearms," the newspaper El Universal newspaper quoted Medina as saying at a conference on Wednesday. Medina's office on Thursday confirmed he had made the statements.

Mexican officials have repeatedly complained that the U.S. must do more to stop the flow of potent weapons -- including assault rifles and even .50-caliber machine guns -- that drug gangs often purchase in the United States.

Last week Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Washington is taking steps to address Mexican concerns about the arms flow. He made the comments at a regional meeting in Mexico also attended by Medina.

In his speech Wednesday, Medina said U.S. domestic drug consumption has fueled trafficking and drug gang shootouts here.

"They are cynical regarding this (consumption) issue," Medina was quoted as saying in Reforma newspaper.

President Felipe Calderon's administration has repeatedly complained that Washington needs to do more to fight drug consumption and aid Mexico in its battle against cartels. Since taking office in December, Calderon has sent more than 24,000 troops to areas plagued by drug violence.

Oh, I get it, Mexico's a mess because we have a Second Amendment. What more do they expect us to do, put the whole country on welfare?

Maybe that too.

But those 24,000 Mexican troops are fighting something of a live fire drug war. The drug lords’ troops are trained by ex-special forces troops (Zetas who include deserters) and are brazen enough to ambush convoys. In the last year civilian and military casualties have reached over 3,000.

But the real question becomes, even if we confisicated all our firearms and locked them away in massive armories, what make him think the drug money rich crooks couldn’t get their arms elsewhere?

In Mexico the guilty are armed and the innocents are not.

They need to work on that.

The US does need to work on its drug habit, though. We’re talking moral reawakening across the board. Its bigger than just drugs, but drugs are a pretty good marker, like the canary in the mine-shaft laying dead in the bottom of her cage.

His beef about the gun issue isn’t even worth responding to. But as far as the drugs are concerned, a nice big fence and extra border patrol agents ought to reduce the drug flow quite nicely.

Hey Mexico, “stop the flow” of your criminals coming into our country to buy weapons.

There have been some spectacular drug trafficking tunnel digs.

However most needn’t even bother. They just walk in at ground level.

Stupidity of this caliber is almost Democratic in scope.

Seems Senor Medina could find gainful employment working for the DNC as a policy adviser.

I’m sure he would be taking a cut in bribe monies, but if he hooks up with William Jefferson, I’m willing to bet he would easily make up for any shortfall.

As a matter of fact, I bet it is.

Read an article I read earlier today (Maybe FreeRepublic?) which says that so many illegals have been deported back to Mexico that they're straining what little passes for relief services. Guess the message should be, don't go north if you can't afford to go south.

Deported migrants end up homeless on Mexico border

I doubt it. When millions are at stake, things seem to get done to make sure the millions are acquired. Agents and fences aren’t enough to stop that.

Hey, Eduardo. If the Mexico-US border was secured, they wouldn’t be ABLE to smuggle those guns across. But then, you’d lose the ability to get rid of your unsatisfied populace too.

The sheer irony of the situation is completely lost on the folks in Mexico City.
