Dear Senator Lott,
I was amazed to observe what happened in the U.S. Senate over the past 3 weeks. It boggles my mind to think that during the last few months, a group of 12 senators, led by Ted Kennedy, met in closed-door secret meetings, while being advised by a couple of George Bush's people and loads of special interest groups and amnesty-for-illegals-advocates. Then, 3 weeks ago, on a SATURDAY morning, this group (affectionately called "The Masters of the Universe" by Senator Jeff Sessions) distributed to the offices of the Senators, a 600-page plus rough draft of a proposal to give amnesty and citizenship to over 12 million immigrants that are presently in this country illegally. Two days later, when the Senate came back in, the so-called leadership stood up and announced that "even though this is a FLAWED bill", it had to be approved by the end of the week. Then, after the shouting settled down, Senate Leader Harry Reid said he would give it an extra 5 days, after the week-long Memorial Day Senate recess. Wow, that was really kind of him. If this was such a hot button issue, Mr. Lott, why didn't you guys work through the recess? You're the Minority Whip. Why didn't you jump up and say that? Uh.......uh.....uh......maybe because you had plans to spend the holiday week in Martha's Vineyard? When the average bill of this magnitude travels through the Senate, it normally takes approximately 6 months. But, this baby was expected to be a done deal in two weeks. Who ever heard of passing an intentionally flawed bill, anyway? Only this incompetent Senate would attempt to do it.
What you pro-amnesty senators apparently don't understand, Mr. Lott, is that one source of this problem is Mexico, itself. Most people don't realize it, but that country is quite wealthy. But, it is extremely corrupt. People literally live in tents on the outskirts of Mexico City. That country's government wants the illegals to cross our borders, so they don't have to assist them. Plus, they (Mexico) are overly happy to have all those millions of U.S. dollars come back south to them over the border every year. We are a never ending cash cow. All at the expense of American workers!
The other source is the lack of border security. Six months ago, our president signed a law, passed by Congress, to build 854 miles of border fence to keep out illegals. You even funded it. At this moment, there are approximately 11 miles erected. Do the math. At that rate, the fence will be completed in 155 years.
Why don't you, Senator, walk up to the podium tomorrow morning and put forth a non-binding Senate Resolution that states in simple words: ' To the President of the United States. From the United States Senate. Resolved: That the President is requested to order the Department of Homeland Security to step up the pace on construction of the fully funded and authorized Border Fence.' I know, Trent,,,, same old story. It's not that easy. There has to be subcommittee and committee hearings, call in experts to testify, get a CBO estimate for printing those 40 words, have a few amendments offered, roll call votes, form and send a Fence Caucus of your peers to the border to have a few photo sessions to make the evening news, etc. That single page, containing 40 words, would take at least 3 months and about $756,000. BUT, you and your friends tried to ram that 600-page Amnesty Bill through the Senate in 9 work days. Do you see something wrong here, Mr. Lott?
Another thing, Trent. A law was passed and signed by the President last year that authorized AND FUNDED the hiring of 2,000 additional Border Patrol agents. Somehow that program was DEFUNDED in the dead of night, after it was made law, and a grand total of 200 new agents were hired. Well, Duh??? Did you know that this new Amnesty Bill was to authorize 8,000 new agents? And, now, we the American people are supposed to believe this new bill will fix the problem. You're already starting out 1,800 agents in the hole, from the existing law. Another question, Senator: How can anyone write a bill that has major impact to the Border Patrol, but not invite any high level Border Patrol people to participate? Can Kennedy and his gang of 12 genius' even point out the Mexican border on a map? Those incompetent twits somehow determined the exact number watch towers, radar towers, holding facilities, vehicles, aircraft, etc, that are required to help secure the border. Probably called in a Senate handyman, who also moonlights as a guard at an all-night parking garage, and quizzed him on the needs of border security. Yeppers, that bunch really knows what's best for us and how to get it done right.
Nowhere in the bill, Mr. Lott, did it even mention protecting the rights of American workers. But, by reading between the lines, it's clear that it tramples on the rights of those American families who are, unfortunately, on the lower end of the wage and economic scale. Has not someone informed my Senator that there are a lot of Mississippi folks in that category? Or, that 16% of our states population does not have health insurance? Why should these folks have to pay for the medical needs of illegals? People who illegally enter this country and then cause a drain on our economy, hospitals, schools, social services and law enforcement should not displace Americans who need jobs or cause them further financial hardship.
Did you even attempt to read the draft of this Amnesty proposal? Obviously not! Did you not even have your senior staff read it? If they did see it and not tell you it was detrimental to the welfare of the citizens of these United States, you should give a lot of thought about hiring a new staff. But, at the same time, you should give a pay raise to your folks who had to answer your phones and take abuse from several thousand angry Mississippians.
You, Senator, stood on the Senate floor Thursday morning talking tough about how this bill HAD to pass and telling senators who oppose it that YOU "will not tolerate a raft of amendment votes designed simply to filibuster the measure" and then finished by snorting "We're going to do this damned thing, and if we don't, I think we should dissolve the Congress and just go home". Does that equate to mean something like "If I don't get my way, I'm taking my ball and going home."? You also said "I am getting calls, but I would say to my constituents: Do you have no faith in me after 35 years that I am just going to buy a pig in a poke here, or be for something that is bad?" Hmmmm ,,,, so much for 35 years, Trent.
Senator Jeff Sessions, of our neighboring state of Alabama, almost single-handed stopped this bill. He and his staff carefully studied that 600-page draft (it wasn't even a clean bill that had gone through Committee), saw what it really did and then had the courage to stand up to the verbal abuse and assault of a handful of his peers. This guy is George Patton, Rambo, John Wayne and Sgt York all rolled into one. He faced down the Senate giants; with Kennedy doing his intimidating shouting and scolding while sneering down his nose at him. You could just see and hear the contempt for this slightly built and mild speaking fellow. I could imagine what Teddy was thinking; "How dare this hillbilly, who sounds like grits and turnip greens, who graduated from a little country college in Montgomery and then received a law degree from THAT redneck University of Alabama, attempt to talk back to me". Then, there was smooth-talking Majority Leader Harry Reid and Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin who tried to intimidate him by doing the soft-soap patronizing routine. You know what I mean....the "I feel your pain" thing. And, lastly, there was you, Mr. Lott. The Minority Whip of the Senate of the United States, telling another senator that YOU will not tolerate his rights and duty to protect the rights of not only Alabama citizens, but those of these United States. But, we all saw who was right and who was also the last man standing. That man rocks.
Senator Lott, I usually keep handy a small pocket copy of the Constitution of this country. It's worn and ragged, but I just went through it, again. It starts out "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America." Nowhere, repeat, nowhere, does this document contain the words "Mexico" or "Mexican Special Interests". Yes, we are, as you politicians like to say, A NATION OF IMMIGRANTS. But, aside from those who were unfortunately forced here in chains so many, many years ago, the overwhelming majority of those immigrants came into this country legally, and, through the due process of the law. That does not include those who have crossed our borders illegally. I won't insult you, Mr. Lott, by asking if you would like for me to send you a copy of the Constitution. I know for a fact that at least one still exists in the Senate. Just have one of your staffers see Jeff Sessions.
This country passed an Amnesty Law in the mid-80's, that was supposed to fix this illegal immigration problem forever. Pssssss, it didn't work, Mr. Lott.
This bill, as written, was nothing but a feel-good deal. Your proponents figured you could, and would, blindly ram this past the voters and then sit back and gloat. This thing was rushed through so fast that the Congressional Budget Office never even got a chance to put an official taxpayer price tag on it. The Heritage Institute did one, however. $2.6 Trillion. As you politicians like to say, Senator, 'That's trillion with a "T" '. Thank God it failed cloture.
I don't know if my good senator from Mississippi noticed, but 11 of the 49 Democrat senators apparently felt cloture on this Amnesty boondoggle was (1) poorly written (2) being rammed through without the required debate and (3) was not in the best interest of the United States, because they voted against it.
And, you, Trent, were the very LAST senator to cast a vote on the bill's cloture, after standing around the Roll Call Clerk for over an hour, and when you finally did vote, you didn't even have the backbone to vote FOR it. I'll never forget the scene and words...... "Mr. Lott: NO". Why, sir, did you do that, after all of your earlier blustering? I know the answer as well as you. You think you can now come back home and brag to us that you "realized that at the end of the day it was a horrible bill for Mississippi and America, and, by golly, I stood up for you, my constituents". Sorry, Senator, but as you so often like to say: THAT DOG DON'T HUNT.
One last thing, Mr. Lott. Since you obviously didnt read this bill (if you did you would be raising cane), Ill tell you one of the other key points: In order to obtain a temporary visa (Green Card), these illegal immigrant must pass a background check for criminal activity. Sounds good. Right? Wrong answer, Trent. There would probably be thousands a day applying and the bill reads that the background check must be completed in 24 hours. If an answer is not received from law enforcement officials in that time, it is automatically stamped APPROVED / NO CRIMINAL RECORD. It doesnt matter if the person is a child rapist, murderer, thief or whatever. He could even be a member of the infamous gang, MS-13. These guys are in all the big cities (some small towns, also) and make Al Capone look like an alter boy. They are the ones mainly responsible for the drugs coming over the border. These guys dont use plain old handguns. Pure kids stuff! Their weapon of choice is the M-16 and stone-cold murder is their everyday way of life.
I, like probably 90% of America, would love to see a sensible immigration law passed AND ENFORCED. We are basically a nation with a heart and concerned with the plight of the oppressed and downtrodden, though a lot of the macho types don't like to publicly own up to it. If it takes Congress a year to come up with a reasonable plan, so be it. But, do it in open meetings, not behind locked doors at night. Call in independent experts, not special interest groups. Get inputs from real people.
In closing, I must say that you were elected by the American citizens of Mississippi to serve and protect our welfare. By your actions and statements dealing with this bill, you have, unfortunately, let us down. Senator, perhaps it is time for you, in your own words, to "just go home".

If anyone was serious about border security they could have proposed this long ago. Appropriating the money doesn’t mean it will be spent or that the border will be properly enforced.
And no reason to believe that in a few years time this won’t be dropped again.
And there is that no small matter of inadequate INS and enforcement agencies which will never be resolved until the entire documentation program is contracted out to Bank of America or Amazon.
I know what will make all of them sit up and take notice...Pick a state whose constitution allows for a recall vote. Then chose one senator who was just elected to a 6 year term. Start a recall petition. Lo and behold this will capture their attention when a majority of their citizens sign petitions for recall. We’ll see then how strongly they feel about this bill and defying the will of the American electorate!

That’s why the President thinks this movement is idiotic. They are using “the fence” as a symbolic concession. A barrier that is unstaffed & ineffective is worthless.
Enforcement starts with the employer, ID and the tax system.
They are so used to throwing pork around for votes on the hill that they thought it would work for the American public. After all, that is just the way things are done.

Aw come on why not? The general mathematic skills of this administration are historically so far off we'll all be billionaires. It was going to cost less than $50 billion for the police action in Iraq (well over that currently), the pill bill was going to be less than $400 billion (last counts it will be into the trillions), and now this?
We'll probably get 4.4 gajillion in 'fines' from the liberty loving Messicans who cross our borders. After all, we all believe they're going to pay any fines assessed them don't we? I mean our leaders told us this was going to happen and I believe everything our leaders tell us.....and besides it'll give ol' Dunc something to do, after all he's built 2 miles of the fence himself...

I think you have just said round-about that is that the some 3,500 U.S. soldiers who have died in Iraq have been “collateral damgage” for this failed administration.
I still say the people in Lubbock made the right decision in 1978 when they elected Kent Hance to Congress. Unfortunately, the loser of 1978 was not fully unveiled until 2006 and 2007.
