I think the Bible has a lot to say about the Palestinian issue. You were told to kill ‘em all, Joshua!

Seems like bait picked for liberals to set up a false argument with their imaginary religious-to-the-book foes, the “right-wing evangelicals”.

“Resident alien” isn’t ‘illegal alien’.

That’s a dishonest piece. An “alien” in the Bible (Tanakh) referred to any person who was not Jewish. A resident alien was one who lived among and learned from Jewish people but was not yet Jewish. Those commandments were only for the Jewish people—not for one alien nations’ treatment of immigrants from another.

Libs are fond of reminding us that since "times have changed," many Biblical moral injunctions are no longer relevant or binding. But they drop this argument when the subject is illegal immigration. We now live in a system of formal nation states with specific borders, in which travel and immigration between countries is regulated for security and other reasons, not the least of which is to preserve basic social order and cohesion.

A basic principle of social order - and of justice - is that laws be enforced and enforced impartially. The pro-illegal immigration faction wants us to disregard this basic principle. A just society does not give lawbreakers advantages over those who obey the law, and in the current situation, those who obey the law and try to immigrate legally seem to be operating at a disadvantage. .

An excellent point. I’m reminded that my bible says that I should care for the poor - out of my own pocket. No bible says I can satisfy my obligations by sticking my hand in my neighbor’s pocket to do it.

On the use of the word, resident, that was probably referring to mentions of aliens within the gate.

Jesus was very clear about this:

“I tell you the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.”

Jesus was using this known truth to establish himself as the gate by which the leaders of the Church were to guide his flock. But he acknowledged that this was a truth.

Those who knowingly break the law and circumvent the law is a thief and a robber. If they are willing to enter a place improperly, they have no respect for any law.

Culturally, the context of these verses are significantly different from today's situation. Borders were more fluid and there was no massive WELFARE system that the aliens felt they were entitled to. Second contextural aspect was that they were there within the bounds of the law at that time, yet the sovernity of the country they were in was supreme, not being perverted as in today's setting.

Amen. If we treated the aliens like they were treated in the Old Testament, then the aliens would not get all of the education, healthcare, and other freebies that they currently take from us. Also, the politicians who are promoting amnesty are biblically immoral because they are knowingly breaking the promise that they gave to the people who have contributed to Social Security. The pols KNOW that the new aliens will even more quickly bankrupt the system. Breaking promises is biblically immoral. If the aliens stay in the USA, then no more taxpayer freebies. Make them pay their way. I believe that would be biblical because that would be fair. Help the stranger? Yes. Do so only by breaking previous promises? No.

The current controversey is about ILLEGAL aliens, not lawful aliens, for crying out loud.

In Old Testament Bible Days, the practice was to to behead or enslave ILLEGAL aliens.

"Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so some have entertained angels unawares."

Do "angels" never leave and steal your belongings and demand welfare and free healthcare?

Bible has lots to say about immigration

It also has lots to say about the Rule of Law (start with Deuteronomy), but apparently Bush and his bleeding heart allies aren't interested on those parts.

Religious “leaders” have said this type of stuff many, many times: Mahony, Jim Wallis, etc. etc.

If you want to do something about this, you have to take it to them, you can’t expect them to come here.

For instance, everyone could leave on-topic comments on relevant entries at Wallis’ blog (blog.beliefnet.com/godspolitics) pointing out how he’s wrong, how what he supports will make the situation worse, etc. etc. The goal is to discredit him (while not discrediting yourself).

nobody has ever advocated that we ABUSE or MISTREAT illegals, only that we enforce the law. This is a slick bit of lefty truth-twisting.

Agreed. And what about applying some old-fashioned Biblical laws to illegals, you know, the ones about trespassing, stealing, coveting, and bearing false witness?

What Jesus said about paying taxes: (From Wikipedia)

“Render unto Caesar…” is a phrase attributed to Jesus in the synoptic gospels. Jesus gives this answer to the question of whether it is lawful for Jews to pay taxes to Caesar. The full sentence this phrase comes from is “Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s”

If these illegal aliens were Christian, they should feel guilt that they haven’t paid taxes, as is demanded of all working in the United States. These alien lawbreakers need to back home to Mexico or wherever they came from, and stop breaking God’s and Man’s laws.

Our Pastor’s letter to the Congregation 2 weeks ago was on immigration and immigrant rights. I no longer have the letter, but I shall try to quote from memory.

People have a right to earn a living for themselves and their families.

People have a right to move to another place to earn a living for themselves and their families.

Nations have a right to secure their borders.

There was more to it, but the gist is that we do not have to open our borders to anybody.

This is a Catholic Church and a Catholic pastor.
