ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) -- The Oakland Raiders canceled the final week of their offseason training program Friday after complaints from the NFL players' union about the intensity of the practices.

In a brief statement, coach Lane Kiffin said the players' union believes the Raiders' offseason program violated league rules on practice standards.

"The union has complained about the high level of intensity, player aggressiveness and fast pace of our practices and, as a result, has taken away the final week of our offseason program," said Kiffin, the NFL's youngest and least experienced head coach.

I believe the NFLPA has every reason to complain about this. These off-season workouts are supposed to be “voluntary” under players’ contracts, but they’ve ppretty much become “mandatory” for most teams. This has long been a bone of contention between teams and the NFLPA, and will probably get resolved only when the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement is updated.

Don't enter into these agreements if you do not expect to be held to the contracts language.

Simple really.

Oh I don't know...

My comment is only relevant in that when a college coach accepts a 5 million a year salary to go to the pros, then gets to "boss" guys making 2 or 3 times as much as he is and who are somewhat older than the "student athletes" and less "bossable," it proves difficult...

It reminds me of a video clip I saw in the mid 1980’s after the Raiders moved to L.A. It showed Marcus Allen and Frank Hawkins in a fancy salon getting a manicure.

This is a farce.

This story is a bogus sham to make Upshaw look good, there is no doubt whatsoever that the raiders are cooperating in a scam story that BS to help Upshaw.

I guess favors do get repaid in raider nation.

I guess a rookie head coach should learn to stay within league rules. But if players on a 2-14 team think a mini-camp is too hard, imagine how they’ll feel during the regular season when they meet a playoff-caliber team.

As a former union member for over 20 years I am offended by unions. They work hard to make the mediocre equal to the exceptional. Unions are a sore on the back of hard working Americans. I am also bias.

“I am also bias.”

Yup, and, I think, also sour grape.
