Arnold Schwarzenegger To Hispanics: Turn Off Spanish Television

Arnold Schwarzenegger, the California Gov., has come under fire from leaders of the Latino community for telling a convention of Hispanic journalists that immigrant students should "turn off the Spanish television set" if they want to want to succeed academically.

As reported by the Associated Press, the Austrian born Governator told the group that he realized "this is the politically incorrect thing to say, and I'm going to get myself in trouble" but that he forced himself to learn English as a young immigrant and to this today rarely speaks German.

However, the Associated Press reported that many journalists in the audience expressed surprise.

"I'm sitting shaking my head not believing that someone would be so naïve and out of it that he would say something like that," Alex Nogales, head of the National Hispanic Media Coalition, told the AP. He emphasized that a great many of immigrants depend on Spanish-language media to remain informed.

Yeah, sure is "naive" to think that listening to a language could ever help someone learn that same language.

Spanish TV is a load of garbage anyway. I am Puerto Rican, a native Spanish speaker, and I avoid that stuff all I can.

There's probably more Spanish TV here in the states than in Mexico.

Of course with satellite TV, Spanish, English or any TV you can think of is available around the world.

Whatever you think of Arnold (im no fan) Arnold is an immigrant that came to this country legally made the effort to learn the common language and assimilated ...

It show the respect any nation deserves if you decided to move there

The current illegal crowd and supporter show none of this .. they come in illegally and demand the country accommodate them...

Well, then, Jrios, you’re missing out on a lot of good spanish novelas :-). Arnold makes a very valid point, if you want to learn english, the fastest way to do it is to surround yourself with it and watching just spanish tv isn’t going to help. This is just common sense advice, yet there are those who want to make a big issue of what he said.
