Washington, D.C. Congressman Duncan Hunter (CA-52) today praised Sgt. Brian Johnston, a Camp Pendleton Marine who was held at the La Mesa State Penitentiary in Tijuana, Mexico, for exhibiting courage and integrity during his incarceration. Sgt. Johnston was arrested by Mexican customs officials on October 30 after missing his exit at the San Ysidro border checkpoint and mistakenly driving into Mexico with firearms while on official business. The U.S. Marine was released late Friday evening after the Attorney General of Mexico, who was approached by Congressman Hunter earlier in the week regarding the situation, petitioned the Mexican court to drop all firearms possession charges. Congressman Hunter traveled immediately to the prison Friday evening after arriving at Lindbergh Field from Washington, D.C. and accompanied Sgt. Johnston back to the United States upon his release.

I am very, very proud of Sgt. Johnston and the manner in which he has conducted himself as a U.S. Marine during a difficult situation, said Hunter. Brian and his wife were always positive and serve as shining examples of bravery and courage. I am very happy to see this family reunited.
Sgt. Johnston was met on Saturday afternoon by his wife, Crystal, and their two young sons who traveled to San Diego from their home near Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

I am not familiar with this case. How long was he in prison for taking the wrong turnoff? I hope it wasn’t more than a few days.

BUMP
I’ll check to see.
He was arrested October 30th? What took so long? traffic coming into the US?
Gotta love the Marines. No whining. Glad the family is reunited, and so far, I vote Hunter.
This is a 1999 archive.
..even so, that doesn't negate the caring and quick action of Duncan Hunter!
There were rallys here in San Diego, for the Mexican government to free this Marine, including a large caravan going to the Mexican border, with intentions of stopping traffic going into Mexico, however, the CHP soon stopped that, but would not reign in Other groups disrupting traffic for Mexican causes..It was a neat rally, I was glad I could participate, and ever happier Sgt. Johnston was finally free...
That Marine should be punished — for not single-handedly overthrowing the Mexican government, as a single Marine could.
Thanks. I guess I should brush up on my reading comprehension skills. So it was a little over two weeks. I would think the Mexicans could have figured out the error sooner than that. But thank goodness they didn't keep him for years.
It is good to see that Duncan Hunter actively petitioned the Mexican court to save him. His heart was in the right place even before the Minutemen shined the spotlight on our problems with Mexico.
You’re not the only one who needs to read everything! :-) I didn’t see it was from 1999.
Duncan Hunter travelled immediately to the prison....
Exactly what Rep. Hunter has done in the past - he answers the call every time. He takes his job, and the dictates of his heart, very seriously. He would want to welcome Sgt. Johnston back. Now I pray for the release of the Haditha eight Marines, and the pardons of Border Patrol Ramos and Compean.
Mexico is one country I would never visit.
Amen
Duncan Hunter is going to be on Terry Andersons show on KRLA.com tonight...

No doubt, this sounds like a case that sutton will jump on to prosecute. God bless Hunter.
