The North Carolina House has passed a resolution asking the Department of Defense to work to get the remains of a Marine killed in 1975 returned to Duplin County.

Lance Corporal Joseph Nelson Hargrove was captured by Khmer Rouge forces on the Koh Tang Island in Cambodia and executed in the days after he participated in an assault to free crew members of the ship Mayaguez.

Hargrove's gravesite was positively identified on the island in 2001.

Representative Russell Tucker, a Duplin County Democrat sponsoring the bill, urged his colleagues to back the resolution so Hargrove's "remains can rest his peace in his native soil."

The measure would be sent to the Defense Secretary Robert Gates if next approved by the Senate. Hargrove's widow was in the House gallery during the debate.

This is an outrage, that he wasn’t returned in 2001!

Here is another article with more detail......his brother was KIA in Vietnam, too.

The real outrage is the whole story of the Mayaguez “rescue”, and how we left these men behind. It was a terrible and unforgivable ending point to the Vietnam war.

“It was a terrible and unforgivable ending point to the Vietnam war.”

Lets see.....all of our combat troops were out as af Feb 1973 when (at least some of) our POW’s were released; and the very few Americans remaining in Vietnam were evacuated on 29 April 1975 when Saigon “fell” because congress cut aid to the S Vietnamese. Two weeks later the Khmer Rouge seized the Mayaguez. Your statement needs work.....

No disrepect intended. As I recall, the Mayaguez incendent took place after the end of the war, but the incident itself seemed to be a continuation of the political bufoonery that marked the war itself. The rescue mission commenced after the crew had been released (difficult communications involved) then the three men themselves were left behind, last seen fighting in the LZ. The blame lies at the top, in my opinion, with President Ford. (all of the above is from memory, which may be faulty...)
