ABC 7 News - Metro Closes Green Line Stations After Hazmat Situation
Hazmat crews from D.C., Prince George’s and Montgomery County say someone released commercial-grade rat poisoning at several above ground Metro stations, Sunday afternoon.
Metro spokeswoman Cathy Asato says the Greenbelt, Takoma Park, Naylor Road and Anacostia stations were closed while authorities investigate an early report of a man seen spraying some sort of chemical.
The first report came from Naylor Road station just after Noon Sunday.
Asato says the Greenbelt station had as many as 20 dead birds outside, and the others had one to three each.
The Takoma Park and Naylor Road stations are still close. The Greenbelt and Anacostia station been cleared and have since reopened.
Crews are also investigating the Rhode Island station after another dead bird was found.
Metro has set up shuttle buses between the College Park and the Greenbelt stations as well as the Silver Spring and Takoma Park stations on the red line.
Hazmat units are finding kernels or seeds on the ground around the reported Metro stations. Investigators determined the substance contained DCon rat poison, said District of Columbia Fire and EMS spokesman Alan Etter.
Etter says officials are looking for a person in a black pickup truck who witnesses saw spraying the substance.
Emergency crews from several jurisdictions are still on the scene.
