Report: NASCAR To Change Name Of Premier Racing Series Next Year
local6 ^ | 20-June-2007

Posted on 06/20/2007 12:39:11 PM PDT by stainlessbanner

Sprint will replace Nextel as title sponsor of NASCAR's premier racing series starting in 2008, according to an ESPN.com report citing sources.

The series will be known as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, the report said.

NASCAR declined to comment.

The move would mark the third time in four seasons that NASCAR's Cup Series changed names.

From 1972-2003, the Cup Series was sponsored by R.J. Reynolds tobacco through its Winston cigarette brand. Nextel assumed the naming rights in 2004.

It’s ALL about money. Racing sure isn’t what it used to be!

I suppose that makes sense since Sprint bought Nextel. “Sprint” seems more fitting anyway. To me at least.

Change it back to Winston Cup. When the health-nazis and statists bitch, tell them the name refers to Churchill, not the cigarettes. It would be worth it to see them in a frothing rage.

You do realize that Sprint bought Nextel. This makes perfect sense.

You and I need to have a beer or twelve. I despise that little $#it for destroying a perfectly good sport. I can't wait till it all crashes down. This is a major pillar buckling.

There is already a sprint car series. /s

I think there is a market for stock car racing in the Southeast. I’m surprised that someone hasn’t started a series, since Nascar has abandoned stock cars.

They really do seem to be working on getting rid of us more traditional fans.

This is the first time in years I haven’t watched The Winston (yes I still call it the Winston) because they decided to show it on SPEED which my cable company doesn’t carry. However I was encouraged to “call my cable company now” and tell them to charge me another $10 a month for one channel.
