  • Sausage heist spoils fun for everyone

Fallout from the recent abduction of a racing sausage has landed right on the Locust Street Festival. Organizers of the party this Sunday have been told by Klement's that they won't be able to use the Famous Racing Sausages costumes as they have in past years. And they're not the only ones getting stiffed on the costumes. The pranksters who stole the bigger-than-life Italian sausage in February during a festival in Cedarburg have, as our mothers would say, ruined it for the rest of us. "Our policies at Klement's have indeed changed due to the theft of the Klement's Famous...

Saturday’s running of the Belmont Stakes might not live up to the finish on Friday afternoon in the Brooklyn Handicap, one of several high-profile races run at Belmont Park the day before the last leg of the Triple Crown. Before a national television audience on the NBC Sports Network, the $700,000 Grade II Brooklyn Handicap saw 7-1 Calidoscopio pull off not just an upset but perhaps one of the greatest closes in racing history. Down 22 lengths at the midway point of the 1 ½ mile Brooklyn Handicap, jockey Aaron Gryder was out of the picture for much of the...

Sadly, at least two bus drivers in Iowa had to learn the hard way that street racing school buses with elementary school children on board "is never a good idea," losing their jobs in the process. According to reports, one driver decided to pass the one in front on a snowy day in February while schlepping the kids back from a Valentine's Day activity. The kids cheered, for a little while at least, until they realized that the other driver wasn't slowing down to let their bus overtake. According to school officials, the bus driver who attempted the errant pass...

Raleigh NC:  Jeff Gordon announced a couple weeks back that he was firing his entire pit crew. The big surprise came in the wake of President Obama's general NASCAR outreach, in particular a federal scheme to employ disadvantaged inner-city youth. What sealed the deal was a recent study that showed how unemployed youths from Harlem were able to remove a set of wheels in less than 6 seconds -and without proper equipment- whereas Gordon's existing crew could only do it in 8 seconds, and this with thousands of dollars’ worth of the latest high-tech power tools.  Initially thought to be...

Legislation has been introduced that would pave the way for Suffolk County Regional Off-Track Betting to declare bankruptcy and potentially avoid bailing on its debts, which might include money for the New York Racing Association. In December, a federal judge ruled Suffolk OTB could not declare bankruptcy without approval from the state Legislature and Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Suffolk OTB had filed for bankruptcy last spring and faced opposition from Churchill Downs, the Kentucky race course that is one of its largest creditors, even though the bankruptcy plan included a framework to pay all debts in full. Hialeah Park, after an eight-year slumber, roared back to life Saturday afternoon -- attracting a crowd of 26,874 eager to watch horses once again gallop down one of the world's most famous racetracks. The packed house cheered at the 1:05 start time, followed by another boisterous shout when, once the fourth race had ended, the track's signature pink flamingos flew overhead en masse.

Like his neighbors, Jonathan Bird had grown tired of hearing tires squeal on the street outside his Wylie home. When the 28-year-old confronted five teens about the annoyance just before midnight Saturday, they responded by beating him to death on a neighbor's lawn, police say. Four of the five suspects charged with murder are 16 years old. Their names are being withheld because they are minors. The fifth suspect is 17-year-old Ethan Dorris of Wylie.

A custom-designed racecar bearing the phrase "Always Remember" was unveiled Monday by NASCAR's Benny Gordon across from the World Trade Center site. Gordon will race the car on Sept. 11 at the Richmond International Speedway in Virginia. It also bears the phrase "9/11 Memorial," a reference to the National Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum. Gordon co-owns the North South Motorsports team, based in Dubois, Pa. It's near the memorial site for United 93, one of four hijacked jetliners that crashed on Sept. 11, 2001.
