Legislation has been introduced that would pave the way for Suffolk County Regional Off-Track Betting to declare bankruptcy and potentially avoid bailing on its debts, which might include money for the New York Racing Association. In December, a federal judge ruled Suffolk OTB could not declare bankruptcy without approval from the state Legislature and Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Suffolk OTB had filed for bankruptcy last spring and faced opposition from Churchill Downs, the Kentucky race course that is one of its largest creditors, even though the bankruptcy plan included a framework to pay all debts in full. Last spring, NYRA President...

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon died Sunday in a fiery 15-car wreck at Las Vegas Motor Speedway when his car flew over another on Lap 13 and smashed into the wall just outside turn 2. Wheldon was 33. Drivers were told of Wheldon's death in a meeting about two hours after the fiery, smoky crash that many drivers said was the worst they had ever seen. He won the Indianapolis 500 twice, including this year. "IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries," IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said. "Our...

In 2008, she was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in suburban Detroit. Dozens of firsts are attached to her name: the auto industry's first female test driver in 1954; the first to set a female world land speed record in 1956 (145 mph at Daytona Beach); and the world land speed record for women...

Donald J. Trump today informed the Indianapolis Motor Speedway that he may be announcing shortly his intention to run for the office of President of the United States, and therefore he thought it would be inappropriate to drive the Pace Car for the 100th anniversary running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 29. “I very much appreciate the honor, but time and business constraints make my appearance there, especially with the necessary practice sessions, impossible to fulfill,” Trump said. “I look forward to watching the race from New York.” Jeff Belskus, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation president and chief executive...

What's better than morning coffee...? Try an adrenaline rush... now available online lol- Here's a cool Shell commercial produced for the European market: ostensibly the Ferrari F1 racing team sponsor is selling gasoline here, but the historic Ferrari racing cars steal the show... Scuderia Ferrari actually pulled several near-priceless Formula One veterans out of storage and flew them around the world to film them running hard through the streets of Rome , Rio , New York , Hong Kong and Monaco. And there are no special effects or dubbed sound here, just original 14,000+rpm cars tearing up the streets... as the genuine...

The State Fair Commission, whose members are appointed by the governor, had been scheduled to consider an eleventh-hour, back-room deal enabling the Downs at Albuquerque to build a new slots casino. Craig Swagerty, general manager of Expo New Mexico, the agency that runs the fair, said the meeting was canceled because he didn't expect a quorum of commissioners to attend. Maybe commissioners realized the deal just didn't look good with Richardson leaving office Friday. The Downs and its officers — including Richardson good buddy Paul Blanchard — contributed more than $300,000 to Richardson's two campaigns for governor. Blanchard also was...

MOSCOW (AFP) – In a helmet emblazoned with the emblem of Russia and reaching a speed of 240 kilometres (150 miles) an hour, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin Sunday burned rubber on a racing circuit in a Formula One car. The high-speed session -- unthinkable for almost any other world leader -- was the latest in a series of widely publicised hardman outings for Putin as he seeks to cement his image as the Russian strongman ahead of 2012 elections. It was also aimed at raising the profile of the sport in Russia as the country prepares to host its first...

A terminal building at the airport is named after Johnny Cope. Marty Cope is the founder of an annual Christmastime fundraiser for foster children. Reared in Hobbs, Johnny Cope first registered to vote in Lea County in 1972; Marty Cope, a native, started voting there in 1998. I haven't figured out yet who will win the Kentucky Derby, but I have figured out how that horse will win -- by coming from way, way back. With the group that's set to line up at the starting gate Saturday at Churchill Downs, the pace for this Derby figures to be among the fastest in the history of the race. If so, any horse who gets anywhere near the lead is doomed to fail

This is the biggest challenge to New York racing in a long time. Monmouth Park, in New Jersey, will offer the highest daily average purses in America in what could be an elite thoroughbred meeting in direct competition with Belmont and Saratoga. The one-year Monmouth experiment, which cleared a major hurdle by gaining the approval of horsemen on Monday, runs from May 22 to Sept. 6 and offers daily average purses of $1 million. By comparison, Saratoga Race Course in 2009 offered $730,000 daily to lead the nation. Belmont Park this year runs from April 30 to July 18 and...

BAD weather conditions in Britain and Ireland have hit the fixture list, leaving no racing on Sunday in either country. The all-weather card at Southwell was the first to fall victim shortly after 9am, when clerk of the course Roderick Duncan decided to abandon the meeting on safety grounds. Duncan explained: "The track's fine but all the other roads around are covered in four inches of snow and it's extremely dangerous." Britain's other fixture at Sedgefield was the second casualty of the day. Officials were forced to cancel the card at 10am due to a frozen track.

(SNIP) Still, all-Danica-all-the-time clearly has a rankling effect. You hear plenty of jokes this week about his DIS now stands for Danica International Speedway, or how the television network airing the Nationwide event should be renamed DSPN, or how the city should just change its name to Danica Beach. When Kurt Busch appeared in the media center on Friday, one writer asked if the interview session would be transcribed. "If Danica were here, it would be transcribed," Busch quipped. And via Twitter, there was this snarky broadside from Scott Speed: "According to the 'media' not only is Danica the most...

"This is the right engine for the car," said Bob Fascetti, Ford's director of large gas and diesel engines. For the past 10 years, Jesus Leonardo has been cleaning up at an OTB parlor in Midtown Manhattan, cashing in, by his own count, nearly half a million dollars’ worth of winning tickets from wagers on thoroughbred races across the country. During his glorious run, Mr. Leonardo, 57, has not placed a single bet. “It is literally found money,” he said on a recent night from his private winner’s circle. He spends more than 10 hours a day there, feeding thousands of discarded betting slips through a ticket scanner in a never-ending search for someone else’s lost treasure. “This has...

The packed house cheered at the 1:05 start time, followed by another boisterous shout when, once the fourth race had ended, the track's signature pink flamingos flew overhead en masse.

FONTANA, Calif. -- What goes around comes around, and in Brian Vickers' case, it came around at pole-winning speed Friday at Auto Club Speedway. With a lap at 183.439 mph (39.250 seconds) Vickers claimed the top spot for Sunday's Auto Club 500 Sprint Cup race, the second event on the 2009 schedule for NASCAR's foremost series. Vickers, whose No. 83 Red Bull Toyota was wrecked after contact from Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s Chevrolet in last Sunday's Daytona 500, rebounded smartly from that catastrophe, edging three-time defending Cup champion Jimmie Johnson (183.164 mph) by .059 seconds at the 2-mile speedway.
