BAQUBAH, IRAQ Troops in armored vehicles swept through this city north of Baghdad on Tuesday as the U.S. military launched a major offensive as part of a significant shift of focus from inside the capital to surrounding areas.
American commanders say the offensive, which involves about 10,000 U.S. troops in Baqubah and other parts of Diyala province, is designed to stop the flow of bombs into Baghdad.

You both are thinking of Ft. Lewis, Washington (state of), near Seattle. It is home to the 10th Mountain Div. As well as the new Stryker Brigade.
Ft. Hood is in Texas, near Kileen. To my knowledge it has no Stryker units. It is home to the 1st Cavalry Div. and the 4th Infantry Div. (mechanized).

"One cannot but ponder the question: what if the Arabs had been Christians? To me it seems certain that the fatalistic teachings of Mohammed and the utter degradation of women is the outstanding cause for the arrested development of the Arab. He is exactly what he was around the year 700, while we have kept on developing. Here, I think, is a text for some eloquent sermon on the virtues of Christianity." - General George S. Patton, diary, June 9, 1943.

I can't speak about the new Stryker Brigade, but regarding the 10th Mountain they are based at Ft. Drum in New York and not at Ft. Lewis. I know this as my son is with the 2nd BCT/10th Mountain Division and is presently based at Camp Stryker in Iraq.

They must have moved the 10th. The last time I was at Lewis (about 15 years ago), it was home of the 10th. The last decade has seen some major re-shuffling of basing deck and I am not quite up to speed it seems.

Was just watching a DVD documentary about Iwo Jima last night and watching the Marines and tanks with their flame throwers.
The Japanese defenders were in those mining tunnels and caves and the flame throwers were the only way to stop them from their constant sniping and mortaring of our Marines there. They were good shots, too. Lost a lot of Marines to head shots.
Interesting comment by one Marine vet of Iwo was that they were lucky that the volcanic soil was porous, that the mortars sunk in a bit before they exploded.

Michael Yon is the best reporter out there, and most likely to follow them through the whole campaign.
