Bush close to shutting down Guantanamo

The Bush administration is nearing a decision to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility and move terror suspects from there to military prisons on U.S. soil.

According to the Associated Press, President George W. Bush's top national security and legal advisers are expected to discuss the move at the White House on Friday and it appears a consensus is developing for the first time among Bush's inner circle.

They will consider a new proposal to shut the highly controversial prison, built at a US military enclave on the southern tip of Cuba, and transfer nearly 400 detainees to one or more U.S. Defense Department facilities, including the maximum security military prison at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, where they could face trial, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing internal deliberations.

Officials familiar with the agenda of Friday's meeting said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff, National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell, Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Gen. Peter Pace and Vice President Dick Cheney are likely to attend.

It was not immediately clear whether the meeting will result in a final recommendation on Guantanamo to President Bush..

This report was refuted and put to rest by one of the alphabet newscast today. Seems to be that Sec. Gates thinks it would be a good idea but he is not finding many in the admin. who are interested.

Here’s a better idea - shut down the Bush administration instead.

I cannot believe I am writing this but WTF?! Bring the terrorists to Kansas so the Anti-Christian Lawyers Union can sue for their habeas corpus rights? Please tell me this is a joke.

I’m pretty sure Gates wants to shut down Gitmo. I don’t see it staying open much longer.

“How about we just shoot the bastards there? Once they get on American soil, every Brett Girl attorney is going to start sueing the US to get these turban heads released on bail.

Meadow Muffin”

If we don’t have terrorist attacks to “force” us to free them, first!

"nearing a decision" That does not sound like someone is going to close it. It sounds like its a yes or no decision. He can very easily say no.

If he could, Jorge would run as a liberal dhimmicrat for president. Fortunately, he can’t. Enough said.

Good point - by the time Bush is done with this term, Teddy Kennedy will be on the SCOTUS.

A lot of the remaining prisoners should probably be sent back to the countries of which they are citizens. Surely we’ve already gotten any useful intelligence info out of them that we’re ever going to. And a lot of them are from countries like Saudi Arabia who will deal with them a whole lot more harshly (and quickly) than we ever will. Where the countries they belong to can be pretty well counted on to make them wish they were back at Guantanamo, or simply execute them quickly, they should be sent home.

The title doesn't even come close to the facts in the article.
