Rudy Out of Iowa?

WASHINGTON -- The acceptance of former Rep. Jim Nussle to be President Bush's budget director provides more evidence that Republican presidential front-runner Rudy Giuliani is downgrading his effort in Iowa caucuses leading off the GOP delegate selection process next January.

When Giuliani bowed out of this summer's Republican presidential straw poll at Ames, Iowa, the former New York City mayor's camp insisted he was not abandoning the caucuses. But Nussle, defeated for governor of Iowa last year, was the most prominent Iowan for Giuliani. The perception in Iowa is that Nussle would not become Office of Management and Budget (OMB) director if Giuliani were serious about the caucuses.

New York snowbirds tend to vote Democrat. The three counties with the largest population of New York snowbirds are largely Democratic. My father is the only guy in his development who voted for Bush and Rob Wexler (Queens) is his congressman.

The NY transplants aren't eligible in the primaries. Methinks the base of his support is among elderly upper midwesterners on the west coast and Cuban Americans in South Florida.

I agree that Rudy will likely win the NY primary, and, possibly, NJ. He would NOT however win those states in the general. Remember, a NJ poll has to show the GOP candidate leading the Dem by at least 7-10 points if said candidate has any chance of winning. The only exception to this rule was the 1997 gubernatorial election, where polls said McGreevey would win, but Christie Whitman managed to squeak by.

Iowa doesn't matter to Rudy because he has no chance of winning there.

Iowa and New Hampshire most certainly matter, though. Once a candidate wins there, national public opinion shifts dramatically in favor of that candidate.

Meanwhile our state department is in ‘talks’ with Mexico about insuring (paying for healthcare, every single ache and pain — of Mexicans in the US illegally). This entitlement will extend to everyone in the hemisphere if the North American Union proceeds apace. How in the world will we pay for that? The mind boggles.
