Elizabeth Edwards’ dream Republican: Giuliani
The Statesman ^ | Friday, June 22, 2007 | W. Gardner Selby

Elizabeth Edwards paused Friday in Austin to raise money for her husband’s presidential campaign, telling a crowd her ideal Republican nominee would be Rudy Giuliani. Her assumption: hubby and former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina might enjoy an advantage in Texas and other southern states over the former mayor of New York.

According to guests at the closed-to-the-press event, Edwards also touted polls suggesting that Edwards would trounce either Arizona Sen. John McCain or Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

In an interview before the fundraiser in the home of Liz and Kirk Watson, Edwards said: “Democrats can win in Texas. You just have to have the right candidates to do it.”

Asked to assess the appeal of U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton to female voters, Edwards said “women have an obligation to support other women… not just women at the top, but women across the board.”But, she stressed, her husband is the only candidate to offer plans for universal health care and to combat poverty—issues that weigh on women.

She disputed a suggestion that running for president must be a grind. Edwards, who has cancer, said she’s actually energized by folks who come to the events she attends.

“I guess we could sit home,” she said. “But I just think it would be selfish to do that when I believe our country needs” her husband.

women have an obligation to support other women

If a man said that, it would be "sexism".

What about Fred, Liz?

Oooh, sorry, John, I didn’t mean to make your hair stand on end!

"I’ve got dibs on her in the death pool."

That's very much pathetic.

Her opinion on anything is even more worthless than her husband’s. Does she really think the pretty pony could carry Texas?

Edwards wouldn’t be elected in his home state let alone other states in the south. His profession and slickness disgust me.

Might as well have pontificated who would win a fight between a griffin and a unicorn. Neither one of those yahoos will see the nomination.

Don’t worry, Breck Boy, no risk to losing your hair care money by having to run a realistic run for the president. You know you’re 2nd tier and don’t stand a chance against Obama and Hilary.

FYI, in case no one knows, the way it works - the candidate can pay themselves the rate of salary for the office they’re going after from campaign funds. So Edwards is pocketing a cool $800,000 off this run (two years of presidential salary) - yup, this is why the Mickey Mouse club comes out every election time.

The merciful thing here is to end his campaign as quickly as possible. He needs to be reminded of his sacred duty as a man and as a husband and stand by his wife in her time of need. My wife has been so wonderful to me. When she had an accident and ended up with 5 herniated disks with one requiring a spinal fusion, the overriding thought in my mind each day was "you take care of that girl".

The emotional trauma from the constant pain was very tough for her. I can't imagine what Ms.Edwards must be dealing with.

Only by a series of miracles did we get one of the most amazing Neurosurgeons who knew exactly what to do. The operation was complicated but was a major success. In addition, by God's grace, we were able to keep Maria in bed rest for a long enough period that she healed very well.

The biggest miracle was that the 4 herniated disks healed somewhat to where she wasn't in constant pain. After 3 months/6 months of rest and therapy, Maria has been able to establish a mostly normal life again.

Sure, she had some pain from time to time, but it's nothing like the days where I could find her hiding somewhere and crying where the kids couldn't find her.

Now she's her smiling, happy self and we constantly watch her to make sure she doesn't do anything physically stressful that could aggravate the (continually healing?) herniated disks.

I built a jacuzzi tub in the bathroom for her therapy, we bought an extra supportive mattress to sleep on (I bought an addition 2" of padding for me that makes it easier for me to sleep, but have to admit even my back feels better!) and did a lot of things to reduce Maria's risk factors in day to day living.

The biggest miracle? God gave me my loving wife back to our family.

Ms. Edwards deserves no less attention. I hope she's getting it.

Mrs. Edwards pines for Rudy huh? Some one whould tell her that her hubby’s true competition is McCain and that they’re only competing for who’s campaign is going down the crapper quicker.

You’ll be playing alone.

That’s not what we’re about on this forum.

If it were not for the valley, Austin, and the ghettos of Houston, there wouldn’t be any democrat party in Texas.

It’s gotta be tough when your husband is so much more feminine
and prettier then you are.
Not any smarter though. And John is a snake in the grass lawyer too.

Sorry Liz, but the “Breck girl” would lose in a landslide to any GOP candidate. He might win Mass. & Calif. but that would be it.
