WASHINGTON - Immigration has supplanted Iraq as the leading issue on television and radio talk shows, complicating the prospects of a Senate bill desperately wanted by President Bush.
Conservative talk radio's impact on the immigration debate reached new heights last week, with one host effectively writing an amendment for when the Senate returns to the imperiled bill this week.
National talk show hosts have spent months denouncing the bill as providing amnesty for illegal immigrants. Some top Republicans who support the legislation have defied the broadcast pundits. Others GOP lawmakers have tried to placate them, even to the point of accepting their ideas for amendments.
Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., the key conservative negotiator behind the compromise bill, told reporters Friday that California-based radio host Hugh Hewitt "had several ideas" that "we are trying to include" in amendments to be offered in an upcoming series of crucial votes.
Hewitt, a conservative who has criticized many aspects of the bill, had Kyl as a guest on Thursday and asked: "Does the bill provide for any separate treatment of aliens, illegal aliens from countries of special concern?"

One such board allows only one long immigration thread per week, which totally squelches discussion, and buries articles within a long thread--thereby hiding them from the board. (And to think, they have a banner from Sean Hannity...!)
Yes, talkshows are having an effect, because they get the word out. Bravo for talkshows, and for internet discussion boards that permit free speech on the topic!
Thank God for conservative talk shows. We’d be dead right about now if they were not there.
John and Ken from KFI are doing a fantastic job on this issue. All their shows are available on demand at the KFI website.
Backwards. They have it completely backwards. The immigration debate is influencing talk radio. Issue after political or social issue is influencing talk radio. If the issues were as the Liberals say, talk radio would reflect that.
Reading this, I was reminded of another headline that heralded a story regarding proposed Section 205 of the new law. Dealing with the requirement of a national ID card, the unintended (or maybe intended) consequences would mean that nobody could work, obtain a driver’s license, or, ultimately, possess the kind of identity documents needed to purchase firearms. True or not, the story highlights the reason why the spotlight provided by talk radio should be on Congress without letup. It’s no wonder they’re squealing.
"MONTHS"
I do not understand why the lawmakers have to deal with all the issues in one bill.
For example: Why is a guest worker program in this bill? they could very easily break it out into its own bill. Border security, already a passed piece of legislation, just needs to be enforced. Why is it in this bill? Amnesty (or what ever it is called), could be a separate bill. Employers and illegal aliens (oops, guest workers) could be dealt with with diligent enforcement.
When ever I have a problem in my life, I break it down into smaller parts and deal with them, then the big problem goes away.
Just say NO to Illegal Alien Amnesty!! Keep calling!! Its NOT OVER!!

I hope most of you are taking a minute to question the party of “conservatism”. WHY do we have to beg this administration and congress to uphold the laws that are already on the books concerning immigration? WHY do we have to plead with this bunch not to pass this amnesty bill that would change, for the worse, forever the face of America? It is time to VOTE THIRD PARTY!!!!! CONSTITUTION PARTY.
Kyl replied: "It's going to, as a result of your lobbying efforts to me."
Kyl is just being a patronizing buffoon with this answer. Nobody believes he heard anything but the fact the bill is on the verge of going down so now he's forced to pretend to want more enforcement even though anyone with only one brain cell knows Teddy and Trent will take it out in conference.
Please see tag line.
I'm voting Conservative. That might be Republican, or maybe third party.

Anything good for the country would not require the length that only serves to frustrate and confuse the reader and to provide hiding places for exceptions and loop-holes.
A “No Sh!t” bump!
GW said he will not piece meal this.....
Savage radio probably influences a lot of people on this issue. I was very close to being a big ‘L’ libertarian till I had conversations with a conservative friend whom watched Savage.
So the word does get out better when you have some form of media.
Well?
Which board is it?
I can't imagine why you'd keep that a secret.
