Clerics to honour Osama bin Laden

A group of Pakistani religious leaders led by a pro-Taliban figure has said it will bestow a title on Osama bin Laden in response to Britain's decision to grant a knighthood to Salman Rushdie.

Allama Tahir Ashrafi, head of the Pakistan Ulema Council, said on Thursday that the group would give bin Laden the title Saifullah.

The name means "Sword of God" and would be given to the al-Qaeda leader for "serving Muslims by waging jihad against infidels".

Ashrafi said: "If Britain can give a knighthood to Rushdie, we too have the right to make awards to our leaders and heroes."

He said that while he was not in contact with bin Laden, the award would reach the fugitive al-Qaeda chief "at an appropriate time".

Ashrafi said his group represented more than 3,000 religious leaders. However, Mohammed Ijaz ul-Haq, Pakistan's religious affairs minister, said he was not familiar with the group.

Ul-Haq has stirred tensions by suggesting the knighthood could justify suicide attacks and undermine Pakistan's effort against "terrorism".

On Thursday, he said he would travel to Britain soon to meet Muslim scholars and promote interfaith harmony.

Religious parties in Pakistan, a predominantly Muslim state of 160 million people, have called for nationwide protests on Friday to condemn Britain for bestowing the honour on Rushdie.

On Thursday, about 200 people rallied in the eastern city of Multan chanting "We are ready to die for Prophet Muhammad's honour" and "Down with Britain".

Pakistan, a close ally of Britain and the US, has condemned the knighthood for Rushdie, who has been accused of insulting Islam in his novel The Satanic Verses.

Protesters have burned effigies of Rushdie and Queen Elizabeth II on the streets of Pakistani cities and demanded that Britain take back the award - a request London has refused.

Can we get the time and place for this glorious event? This should really be televised and if we could just get some coordinates, I’m sure it will be very exciting.

That needs repeating.

I’ll be the first to admit, making Saliman Rushdie a kinght was a stupid decision. He’s a trash writer, pure and simple. But that in no way justifies honoring Osama Bin Laden for anything.

I tried, once... to read a Rushdie book, and got maybe 20 pages into it before I gave up.

He’s worse than the yakkity-yak-yak-yak Russian authors that lit professors loved to inflict on us in high school and college.

What was that Sean Connery said about bringing a GD knife to a gun fight?

Well, turnabout IS fair play. So I guess it's only fair that the Muslims would respond to an honor to an author by honoring a murderous psychopath who dedicates his life to killing thousands of innocents in the most unspeakable ways possible.

A gang of terrorist cult witch doctors are trying to resurrect bin Laden. There are good reasons to believe that he has been dead ever since 2004.

The Islam/Muslims world is not a monolithic body. It is scattered over half the Earth. There are no leaders except for individual tribesmen chiefs who command a small band of terrorists. Most of the “fighters” are peasants running around in ragged nightgowns shooting AK-47s in the air

The only common thread connecting the worldwide Islamic terrorists network is the Islamic religion. The leaders of these diverse gangs are aware that the movement needs a unifying name to rally around.

Bin Laden is a poor choice. He was uninspiring. He was no military leader, left no writings, was not widely known, made no public speeches, and was himself almost totally ignorant of the outside world.

I guess even a dead leader is better than no leader at all.

This guy in the picture is exactly why we are fighting these bastards.

He looks like he wants to kill our Jews, our Christians, our atheists, our gays, our lesbians, our spouses, our kids, our pets and us.

It gets me in church every week when we are petitioned to ‘pray for peace’. It should be ‘pray for victory’.
