Obscuring yearbook photo of a male kissing boyfriend is illegal, gay advocate says
The Star Ledger ^ | June 24, 2007 | JONATHAN CASIANO

A gay-rights group is demanding an apology from Newark School Superintendent Marion Bolden for ordering her staff to black out a picture of a gay couple kissing be fore distributing copies of the yearbook to students at East Side High School.

Calling the directive homophobic and unlawful, Steven Goldstein, chairman of Garden State Equality, said yesterday the school also should redistribute a new batch of uncensored yearbooks at the district's expense.

"This action by the school district will have an unspeakably vile chilling effect on other gay and lesbian students coming out," Goldstein said. "Her (Bolden) trying to erase a student and his boyfriend is a metaphor for her trying to erase the gay and lesbian community out of Newark and its school system. It's wrong and it's ridiculous."

The photograph shows East Side High graduating senior Andre Jackson, 18, kissing David Esco bales, 19, of Allentown, Pa., on the lips. It was among several photos printed on a special page paid for by Jackson to commemorate his high school experience, at a cost of $150.

Yesterday, Bolden said the photo was not targeted because it was two men kissing, but because it was "suggestive" in nature and that she should have also censored other suggestive photos in the yearbook.

She said she promotes an atmosphere of tolerance for gay stu dents at Newark schools and in tends to apologize to Jackson if he believes the district did something to hurt him because of his orientation.

"I will call the student to let him know nothing was intended to hurt him or slight him," she said.

I have nothing against gay people. But I am pissed that homosexuals, transexuals, IV drug users and illegal aliens rank ahead of tobacco smokers and gun owners in the Democratic People's Republic of New Jersey.

Sounds like a very ill-informed kid. Unfortunately too many disputes are settled with violence in Newark. Very dumb to draw attention to oneself like that... given inherent danger of the surroundings.

The principal was doing this guy a favor... protecting him.

Well, good. No one asked them to splatter their deviant mental illness all over everyone's else's life. Do your, whatever the perversion of the month is, in private, and no one will bother you. That simple, but the homo agenda demands more.

I will take the blacked out version,Thank you, saves me having to cut it out myself, and lose what ever is on the back of it’s image.

I don’t care what people do in their bedrooms but keep this hideous crap out of my face and away from my children.
I’m beginning to think that Christians should be as demanding for cultural and religious sensitivities as the muslims are. Islam has a way of persuading people about such things. If you don't do as I want I'll kill a bunch of you, blame that act on you too, and then get what I want. If it works for them, and it does, then it should work for Christians.

If my child were a student at that school - I would be very thankful that the school “edited” the photo, but would be even happier if it was caught BEFORE printing. The right of a homosexual to advertise his sinful and abhorrent lifestyle does NOT trump my right to buy a high school yearbook WITHOUT GAY advertising... period.

The point of the kid buying the ad was not to express his “love” for his queer boyfriend, it was to shove homosexuality down the rest of the school’s throat (no nasty pun intended)

Darkness has fallen across America. Read Romans...

Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves - Romans 1:24

Has God abandoned us? Has he forsaken America? Many have forsaken Him, certainly, but many have not. So I must ask...

The violence in Newark as you well know is drug and gang related.

What do you think his fellow students would do? Tie him up and drag him behind a pickup truck?

Whoever blacked out the picture is backpedaling as fast as they can right now. Yeah, sure, there was no boy/girl kissing pictures in any previous yearbooks. Looking at two guys will make me wretch personally but geez louise, I can turn the page.

I guess I am just pissed off that other “minorities”, including cigarette smokers don’t have this kind of power to make liberal legislators and administrators shake in their boots when they discriminate against us.

In Muslim countries they don't censor the picture with a felt tip pen. They drag the deviants into jail. Is that what you want?

I don't know. I can't believe that I am put into a situation where I have to defend guys who happen to like man ass. They had to be born that way. I like breasts and vagina myself, thankfully. Who would choose to be discriminated against?

Tyler Schultz, a recent graduate of Pewaukee High School in Wisconsin, posed with a 12-guage shotgun and a Confederate battle flag in the portrait he first submitted to yearbook staff members.

The self-proclaimed “country boy” has been a trap shooter for three years and is close with family members in the South. He said he chose the two items because the school had asked students to express their personalities in their senior portraits for the yearbook.

But when Principal Marty Van Hulle saw the photo before an awards banquet, she said the photo could not be published in the yearbook unless the gun and flag were cropped out of the portrait.

“As the yearbook is representative of the school and a publication of Pewaukee High School, it is by its very nature an extension of the school and school district, and therefore it is reasonable for us to regulate the message the school sends via our publications,” Superintendent JoAnn Sternke told GM Today, a commercial newspaper covering the Milwaukee area. “Weapons or images of this sort are not something we endorse or condone in the school environment.”

Schultz and his mother, Tammy Ankomeus, said they were upset they were not told the photo was a problem until late May even though they had submitted the photo to yearbook staff members in October. Schultz submitted an alternate photo that appeared in the yearbook.

“Whether it’s in military, recreational or sporting form, anything shaped like a gun or knife is banned.” — Minnesota government school superintendent Dick Magaard on his decision to ban a yearbook photograph of a female senior sitting next to a small cannon located outside a local VFW post. The student chose the location because she plans to join the Army after graduation.

“The violence in Newark as you well know is drug and gang related.”

There was a lesbian teenage girl that was murdered in Newark a few years ago after she turned down a guy that tried to hit on her by saying she was a lesbian... that was all over the NY papers... Newark is another universe versus normal America.

“If it works for them, and it does, then it should work for Christians.”

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. - Ephesians 6

Friend, our conflict is not with these evil people, but with the spiritual forces of darkness behind them. We’ll never will any real battles by fighting people.

I know what you mean. The homosexuals always claim that what goes on in the privacy of their own bedrooms is their own business, but then seem intent on pushing it in our faces every chance they get. If it's not my business, they should stop trying to make it my business. If they'd keep it to themselves, then people wouldn't fight back.

If they're going to be so outspoken about it, so will I.
