Republicans Hearing Static From Conservative Radio Hosts
Washington Post ^ | June 20, 2007 | onathan Weisman and Shailagh Murray

Posted on 06/24/2007 9:37:05 PM PDT by Mr. Mojo

It was a casual shot across the bow, a shrugged comment last week from Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott (R-Miss.): Advocates of an immigration overhaul would have to "deal" with talk-radio hosts who he said don't know what is in the legislation but want to kill it nonetheless.

The return fire to that passing comment has been withering, as some of the nation's most prominent conservative talkers turn on a man they once defended adamantly.

"When I hear a United States senator say that what I do for a living is a 'problem' that the government has to 'deal with,' you can interpret it any number of ways," Rush Limbaugh said on the air. "He's either saying, 'Well, we're going to have to come up with our own ways to overcome them' or 'We're going to just have to wipe them out.' "

But the conservative response to Lott may be symptomatic of a broader disenchantment with the Republican Party, said Michael Harrison, editor and publisher of Talkers magazine, which chronicles talk radio. The immigration debate is a bellwether, he said, but conservative criticism is brewing on issues from education to spending to Iraq. Last week the magazine granted its annual Freedom of Speech Award to Savage for his criticism of President Bush, the first time Harrison can remember honoring a talk show host for speaking out against someone of his own political persuasion.

Republican politicians "assumed they owned conservative talk radio," Harrison said. "But support of conservatives by talk radio was only being borrowed as long as conservatives felt that Republicans served the conservative movement."

I've, in a cursory way, gone over every page of the amnesty for invaders bill. I wonder if Lott, or any other Senator, can say as much.

[Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.), one of the immigration bill’s chief architects, suggested on Sunday that opponents of the deal border on being racist.

“We’ve been down this road before — ‘no Catholics,’ ‘no Jews,’ ‘Irish need not apply,’ “ Graham said on ABC’s “This Week.”]

This little wimp is really starting to get on my nerves. C’mon people of South Carolina - you deserve better than this!

This immigration bill will prove to be an albatross around the neck of whomever is the GOP nominee. In an attempt to be more like the Democrats and attract the loyalty of the illegal invaders, the GOP will end up losing their base, not gaining any Democrat crossover votes and finding themselves not only losing Congressional seats but the White House as well.

And we all know what a Democrat victory in 2008 brings. It’s quite disheartening to see the mainstream GOP so totally ignore the voice of their base and support this turkey of a bill.

I keep hearing from Congresscritters that no one knows whats in such and such bill and no one understands this or that bill.

Why not propose legislation in plain English so that they could understand what they are voting on? Is that really too much to ask?

"Talk radio is running America. We have to deal with that problem."

I maintain that Lott did NOT say, "Talk radio is running America."; I believe he said, "Talk radio is ruining America." His dialect made the word "ruining" sound like "running".

I just mailed my “gringo dollars” to the RNC, postage due of course. I wonder if I’ll get another fund raising request? Screw the Republicans.

To The Washington Post, Lott had said, "I'm sure senators on both sides of the aisle are being pounded by these talk-radio people who don't even know what's in the bill." To the New York Times, he had offered: "Talk radio is running America. We have to deal with that problem."

Sounds to me like Lott wants to take the same approach to Talk Radio that Mc Stain took to non-candidate political advertising during election campaigns.

Perhaps it is time Lott faced forced retirement.

Their arrogance knows no bounds. It’s way past time for a new broom.

I read an article somewhere yesterday that quoted Lott as saying “talk radio is running America”. Either way, he is on my sh-t list.

I'm with you. It seems to be a common refrain from these shamnesty-supporting Senators that we just don't know what's in the bill. These mice have had all the time in the world to make it crystal clear to the public exactly WHAT IS in the bill, yet they apparently do not have the communication skills to explain it to us in plain English. Hmmmm..... Maybe that's the problem.... Maybe the bill needs to be explained in plain Mexican in order to be understood.

"Talk radio was sort of the watchdog on this," said Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.). "Who else was watching out? Who else was reading the bill?"

That’s Lott’s and Graham’s problem with Talk Radio they like it better when they can legislate with no one watching.

That gave me concern but when I heard him say we were not going to intimidate a United States Senator, it really made me mad! He's got to go.

Did you hear him make the remark about the unions and the talk radio shows as being the reason that Americans are so riled up over the immigration bill? That sorry POS is up for reelection next year, and I'm going to contribute to any conservative that runs against him, and I don't even live in SC.

To: Senator Graham

Senator,
Since illegal aliens currently in the US are from dozens of countries and are of all races, colors and creeds, exactly to whom are those opposed to this monstrosity of a bill, racist?

I would suggest, Senator, that it is you that sees this problem in terms of race.

It is we, those opposed to this irresponsible bill, that see this problem in terms of the rule of law and in terms of national security.

Since you are unable to make the case for this bill that you so blindly promote, you choose to resort to the sophomoric tactic of insulting your opponent. Your statement serves only to prove you inept and unfit to serve as a US Senator.

I don't need to know all the wonderful features of a particular SUV to know I DON'T need one with four-wheel-drive.

The guy who tries to sell me one is doing it for his own benefit: not mine.

And then just how would the lawyers and judges be able to understand it?
