Now there’s the kiss of death. LOL. No senator has won the presidency since JFK did in 1960.

I just had another thought. :) Quite interesting comments from the Senators who know the other senators running: Fred Thompson, John McCain, Hillary!, Barack Obama, Sam Brownback, Chuck Hagel, Chris Dodd, John Edwards, Al Gore, Joe Biden. What a motley crew, for the most part.

Personally, I think the LAST THING this country needs is another Harvard MBA / son-of-a-former politician in the White House.

I would agree with you, IF your comparison was accurate, but it's not. Mitt and George are like night and day. Mitt is a self-made man.

Read here:

Mitt Romney gave his entire inheritance to charity that he received upon his father's death in 1995.

He didn’t pursue a career in any industry with which his father or family had connections, and he moved to Massachusetts from his home state of Michigan where his father's influence could have been a ticket for a free ride.

He managed to get a wonderful education at BYU (class valedictorian) and Harvard, graduating with honors from Harvard with both an MBA (Baker Scholar) and Juris Doctorate, cum laude, in only four years. Plenty of people graduate from Harvard with one of those degrees, yet don't become the most successful venture capitalist and one of the most brilliant executive managers in the country during the last 50 years.

An excerpt from a C-SPAN Q&A interview follows:

LAMB: By the way, why did your father not give you any of his inheritance?

ROMNEY: Well, he didn’t have as much as I think some people anticipated. And I did get a check from my dad when he passed away. I shouldn’t say a check, but I did inherit some funds from my dad.

But I turned and gave that away to charity. In this case I gave it to a school which Brigham Young University established in his honor, the George W. Romney School of Public Management.

And as an institute of public management, it helps young people learn about government and about serving in public service. And that’s where his inheritance ended up.

LAMB: Did he have a philosophy that he didn’t want to pass on a lot of money to his kids?

ROMNEY: Well, I don’t think he had as much as some people might have imagined. And he spent his money on things he cared about. He was a real champion of volunteerism.

So he funded volunteer efforts and worked to support the things he cared about. My kids got some money from my mom and dad. They are happy that they were able to receive some funds. That helped them in their education and getting started in life. But in my case, I figured we had enough of our own.

“Plenty of people graduate from Harvard with one of those degrees, yet don’t become the most successful venture capitalist and one of the most brilliant executive managers in the country during the last 50 years.”

Have you ever dealt with a vulture capitalist first-hand?

BTDT.

Sure as heck don’t want one running my country.

I have a company & bunch of patents and have seen first hand the carnage the buzzards can wreak. Can this guy design anything? Change a tire? Milk a cow? Build a barn? Doubt it. But I am sure he can negotiate an M&A agreement with a fat commission. NO THANK YOU. If you want to worship Harvard magna/summa/notquita cum lauders, knock yourself out. Don’t see where they are doing much for the country besides trumpeting kaizan, Taguchi and outsourcing. Great for short-term bottom-lines, disastrous for long-term health of companies and their surrounding communities.

How can I put this politely? Please keep all your New England-educated politicians in New England. Seriously. Not sure the country can stand another round. Maybe yall could merge with Quebec or something.

:)

I’ll take “Reasons why the Senate is out of touch with reality” for $100, Alex.

No need to punish Quebec. They’re finally getting their act together after decades of Socialist oppression.

I am not sure what you are talking about. I live in California, so y'all can save your anti-NE snobbery for someone else. In any event, I welcome having a brilliant, successful, proven executive in the White House. It's way past time. Good ol' boys? BTDT.

Adults in the United States have a clear idea of the traits they prefer in a presidential candidate, according to a poll by Zogby International. 82 per cent of respondents say it is very important for a contender to be a competent manager,U.S. Wants Competence in Presidential Hopefuls

I agree 100% that any semblance of competence anywhere inside the Beltway would be a refreshing change.

How that relates to another silver-spoon whose diddy was an big-wig politician escapes me, unless you think FDR is a shining example of political genius being hereditary.

My condolences on living in Kali.

>> when Romney defended his Mormon faith at the >> second debate, he was defending people of ALL faiths. Are you saying that Mormon doctrine has changed? May I remind you (and anyone else who is being deceived by Mormon doctrine whitewashing) what Joseph Smith taught about other faiths and what's canonized in Mormon scripture.

Condolences? We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, with some of the best weather and in a very conservative town. We call it heaven on earth. Condolences to the rest of you!

BTW, I forgot to welcome you to FR. When checking your homepage to see what wonderful spot YOU lived in, I noticed you were a brand new FReeper. Boy, you have been quite the prolific poster since joining only a few days ago. You seem awfully comfy (you don't have a prior screen name by any chance, do you? or maybe just a long-time lurker?). In any event --- welcome.

Thank you for the welcome. I have had no other names nor posted before joining here recently. I have posted on several other boards for many years, when one gets stale, I move on to another. This looks like a pretty good place for now, particularly with the amnesty debacle we are facing. Sadly, some of the other boards seem to be blissfully ignorant of the peril the country faces from this travesty. So perhaps I am using kindred spirits to ‘recharge’ before heading back out into the wild unknown.

btw, I would vote for Mitt over any of the Democrats, so please take my critique with that in mind. I just happen to prefer Fred over him. The rest are bums.

:)

Don't blame Joseph Smith. He didn't say it-God did!

As for today's church, we do not criticize other faiths...period. The Church is a good neighbor to other faiths, despite the relentless attacks by other so-called Christians. Mitt Romney has demonstrated virtue and integrity in his personal and professional life, and I challenge anyone to show me evidence to the contrary. The Boston Globe is running a seven-part series on Mitt Romney's life.

http://www.boston.com/news/politics/2008/specials/romney/part1/

I think people who read this with an open mind will come away very impressed with this man. People recognize greatness when they see it.

My mother is Episcopalian and she says she couldn’t vote for him. She says it’s his religion and she believes it will keep him from being elected President.

Up until yesterday she was looking at Fred, but she says yesterday made her lose trust in any of them. As of today, she says she may never vote ever again. She’s 73.

My parents are elderly. It really surprised me as they had raised me to be quite religiously tolerant. Some news source must be swaying them.

I am really surprised at my mother’s stance as well. We had a Mormon housekeeper when I was growing up. My mother trusted her completely and my bnrother and I loved her.
Now my mother, who trusted one to look after her home and children, won’t trust one to look after her country. How odd.

Yes, the immigration shamnesty is an outrage. I see you are quite energized over it on the immigration threads I've read tonight. Funny, but one of the main reasons I'm choosing Mitt over Fred is Fred's past voting on enforcement provisions to fight illegal immigration. He got a C at numbersusa.com. His recent comments on the topic have sounded McCainesque as well IMHO.

Oh well, to each his own. Good thing we are all smart enough (at least) to vote for Mitt instead of a Democrat. Sheesh! Stop with your flattery!
