Washington, D.C. Today, U.S. Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) expressed his strong opposition to the Department of Transportations (DOT) continuing effort to provide Mexican motor-carriers unrestricted access into the United States.
Despite the recent enactment of legislation (P.L. 110-28) requiring specific safety and security regulations be met before the cross-border trucking program can move forward, DOT announced earlier this month that the pilot program will proceed as previously planned.
With the ink still wet on legislation signed by the President putting additional restrictions on Mexican truckers entering the United States, DOTs announcement can only be classified as premature, said Congressman Hunter. DOTs simple assertion, that Mexican truckers scheduled to enter the United States had already been in compliance with the newly enacted guidelines, cannot be accepted at face value.
Even with clear and enforceable guidelines in place, opening Americas roadways to cross-border vehicle traffic is a risky and unpopular proposal. It appears, under the current program, that commercial interests are being pushed ahead of the safety and security interests of the American people. Unless demonstrated otherwise, this is unacceptable.
I believe the cross-border trucking program is bad for America. However, should it be allowed to proceed, Mexican truckers must not be held to lower standards than their American counterparts. If DoT is not willing to address each of the safety and security concerns associated with the cross-border trucking program, then the pilot program should be suspended until these serious issues can be thoroughly and thoughtfully addressed.
NOTE: Included in P.L. 110-28, were provisions from H.R. 1773, the Safe Americans Roads Act of 2007, which passed the House overwhelmingly by a vote of 411-3. Both bills included strict measures to ensure the cross-border trucking program, created under NAFTA, would be compliant with American immigration and traffic laws.
I hope he does.
The pro-mexico lobby needs to be swept out of DC yesterday.
DH PING
How timely....I just read an article yesterday about a truck from Mexico that crashed and blocked traffic all day....but then again, I find the same headlines in news every day.
Usually full of illegals and/or narcotics.
I’m with Hunter on this one.
As usual, Duncan Hunter GETS IT.
He doesn’t need any PR people or the MSM or the Republican elite to ‘splain it to him.
What on God’s green earth are the feds thinking with this boondoggle?
How he has survived in DC for this long without strangling a few politicians and bureacrats with his bare hands is a mystery.
ROFL!!
The same thing they’re always thinking. Who can bring the most lobbyist dollars to them and who can put the most money into campaign coffers.
::::::
These self-serving malfeasants are ruining this country. These IDIOTING money-grubbing schemes are so DANGEROUS it is beyond belief.
I guess the US independent truckers aren’t as rich as the NAFTA crowd.
The man obviously has extraordinary fortitude.
They’re thinking about lining someone’s pockets at our expense. Nothing new about that, is there?
FYI -- a driver's inability to communicate in English is considered an "out-of-service" violation in many states . . . which means the police can force a driver who can't speak English to shut down his truck and have it towed from the highway.
The trucking companies have stronger lobbyists than the independent truckers. It’s that simple.
What the hell is so funny? Coming soon to a highway near you!
