Serbia's Jews appreciate what they have

While on vacation in Belgrade, we sought out the Jewish community, not knowing if after years of war, it even still existed. Yet, after doing some Internet searching, sending out a few e-mails, and consulting a detailed map, we found the synagogue on Marsala Birjuzova Street and navigated our way down roads lined with trendy stores and cafés.

The restaurant is in a large white room with hardwood floors. The ceiling is high and Israeli flags hang from the walls. An old computer sits in a corner near the kitchen, where a handful of women cook and three elderly ladies, speaking Serbian, eat a meal.

As Torontonians used to a Jewish community with tens of thousands of people of all denominations and backgrounds, we are shocked at how organized this community is, having foolishly believed that none existed at all. ... Easygoing and warm, Herzog says he has a daughter who lives in Richmond Hill, north of Toronto. He says that since the recent Yugoslavian war ended, the Jewish community has witnessed a resurgence after thousands of people fled for Israel or North America.

“The problem is going through their paperwork to see who is actually Jewish,” he says with a laugh.

“It takes time,” Herzog says, noting that the vast majority of the community is intermarried.

He explains that some non-Jewish Serbians want to be affiliated with the community because of the many services it offers, such as social programs, a subsidized meal program for the elderly, Hebrew classes and an active Maccabi Youth club – all of which are heavily subsidized by foreign Jewish organizations.

But despite these programs, only a few hundred Belgrade Jews are active in the synagogue.

We interviewed Miriam Fleishman in Paris for the movie “Yugoslavia: The Avoidable War”. She’s of Jewish Serbian heritage and translated Tudjman’s book “Wasteland”. She said there’s a large Jewish Serbian population around Montreal.

"Misha Herzog is a Belgrade native and the community’s treasurer. He is thrilled to chat after coming for a meal following a morning funeral for a Jewish refugee from Kosovo."

Interesting that A Jewish man had had to flee from a Kosovo run by the UN and Albanian MUSLIMS to the Serbian city of BELGRADE, isn't it?

It is more shocking that liberal American Jews support Islamofascists in Kosovo andf theft of Serbian land. Some of them even donate to Islamofascists them to build mosques, and do not give a red cent to Jews in Serbia and Jews who fled from Islamofascists.
