It will be later this year. The Senate has political cover now, because they rejected this one. The new bill will be "so much better" and "so much more focused on security" that many Republicans will switch to support it. The fundamentals won't change. The bill will become law before December.

This is the oldest political trick in the book - deliberately put up an exaggerated bill that everyone hates, defeat it, follow it up with a "much better" bill that contains all sorts of outrages that would never have been tolerated before the intial bill was floated, and get it passed.

Not one Senator ever intended for this bill to pass. It's the next one they'll be betting on.

Maybe, but if we stay on our toes, it won't be easy for them, and those who vote for it will lose their seats next election.

And we'll be fighting en masse to break any bill that doesn't seal the borders first. I know Duncan Hunter is like 1% in the polling, which just baffles me, because he's the obvious conservative to give us true border security while fighting the WOT. The GOP primaries are just as important in winning the immigration debate. Any Bush moderate who wins the nomination. will sign a poor immigration bill.

With all due respect, that's waaayyyy too cynical for me.

They were dead serious about this attempt. They did everything possible to ram it through without public bvetting or scrutiny. GWB made the second trip of his entire presidency to lobby on Capitol Hill. That is pretty darned serious.

I'd like to to give the fine Senators credit for an elaborate and well-planned kabuki, but it doesn't add up. Senators are not the "team players" you need for such a contrivance, they're down in the muck horsetraders.

You give them way too much credit.

But there is a chance that GWB will try again in January or February.

That's my thought to. Get the people so exhausted opposing this bill that they won't have the energy to oppose version 2, which will likely be passed as little amendments here and there

You are correct. I just wish someone in the media would pick this up and state it on the air.
