President Bush Disappointed by Congress's Failure to Act on Comprehensive Immigration Reform
The White House ^ | June 28, 2007 | GW Bush

Posted on 06/28/2007 12:40:20 PM PDT by TomGuy

12:38 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT: I thank the members of the Senate and members of my administration who worked so hard on the border security and immigration reform bill. I'm sorry the Senate was unable to reach agreement on the bill this morning.

Legal immigration is one of the top concerns of the American people and Congress's failure to act on it is a disappointment. The American people understand the status quo is unacceptable when it comes to our immigration laws. A lot of us worked hard to see if we couldn't find a common ground -- it didn't work.

Congress really needs to prove to the American people that it can come together on hard issues. The Congress needs to work on comprehensive energy policy and good health care; make sure health care is affordable without inviting the federal government to run the health care system. We've got to work together to make sure we can balance this federal budget, and not overspend or raise taxes on the American people. We've got a lot of work to do.

When they come back from the summer -- from the July recess, before the summer break begins, we'll be focusing on the appropriations process. And I look forward to working with Congress to balance our budgets and to be wise about how we spend the people's money.

Thank you for your time.

If by "status quo" you mean that you refusing to enforce existing immigration laws is unacceptable then I agree with you jorge.

That would be a new approach. The veto pen hasn't seen much use in budgetary matters.

“A lot of us worked hard to see if we couldn’t find a common ground — it didn’t work.”

It might have worked if La Raza didn’t have veto power over everything included in the bill.

Next time you look for “common ground” maybe you’ll think about giving the American people veto power over what should be included in the legislation.

By the by, you won’t get the kind of legislation if you ask Kennedy to put it together for you. Try Senator Sessions next time around.

Like hell. They realize the status quo of your piss-poor enforcement of such is unacceptable.

Now, since you made the case that you need more resources for enforcement, I fully expect to see you and Chertoff push for a bill that would authorize and fund all the enforcement provisions in the failed bill, without all the other nonsense.

Yeah, and I also expect Michael Moore to develop anorexia.

I hope the President will grieve and then let this sleeping dog alone. He should concentrate on other issues like telling congress where to shove their subpoenas, pardoning Libby and winning in Iraq.

Not as much as we’re disappointed in him for shoving this down our throats.

The Congress needs to work on comprehensive energy policy.
**********************************
They just punted that too didn’t they?? The D’s couldn’t allow nuclear power to be the cornerstone of electric production...

I got my wish ,,, a (RINO) president reduced to impotence and a congress that can’t pass anything... Hooray! no new bills until we vote in a real conservative as pres. and a congress that listens to us..

Get Rush, Newt, Cronyn, Hunter, Tancredo and a few other thinkers and maybe something will gel.

There is no major legislation that is expected to pass until after the elections, so he might as well concentrate on seeing our military involvement in Iraq carried through successfully, before retiring to Crawford.

..and yet, still not a word about protecting the borders. His speech is sour grapes. How about acknowledging that OBVIOUSLY the people of America don’t want this abomination and then RESPECTING that wish by defending the borders NOW.
