Eleven minutes after voting in favor of cloture on the Senate immigration bill, Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback changed his mind—and his vote—to oppose cloture, MSNBC reported earlier today. Now it seems that the Brownback campaign has changed its mind again, this time on a press release it produced just days ago. On Tuesday, June 26, the campaign released a statement after Brownback voted in favor of cloture. The statement originally appeared here. It’s now gone, but was cached and can be seen here. In a press release that still does exist, Brownback explained his vote today against cloture: “I became convinced along with many of my colleagues on the floor that this version of the immigration bill was not, and would not become the vehicle that would fix our broken system as I had hoped.” Or perhaps he became convinced that if he continued to support the current immigration bill, he would continue to be hammered by conservatives and the other ’08 Republican hopefuls. Indeed, in a previous interview, Tamara Scott, a prominent Iowa social conservative and head of the Iowa chapter of Concerned Women for America, called Brownback “a solid senator [though] there does seem to be some concern with his immigration stance when I talk to people.” Though his recent vote against cloture will please some conservatives, there is the potential that a) conservatives won’t believe Brownback’s commitment to the issue considering his lengthy support of the bill and b) that he will be seen as a flip-flopper, just another pandering politician. We'll see if conservatives are able to make up their minds. |

Now is not the time to let up. We need to pressure our politicians to enforce the existing immigration laws including deporting illegal aliens, building the fence and prosecuting businesses who do business with illegal aliens. The link below is a ping list to pay attention for other questionable legislation being considered in Congress.

Nope, because we caught the weasel red-handed, courtesy of Michelle Malkin.

Nice picture of the Senator. But he is a disgrace to principled weasels everywhere. And get this from NR: A Bit More from Sam Brownback
Sam Brownback offers an additional comment on his voting yes, then no:
"I wanted to signal that I am supportive of comprehensive immigration reform, but that now is not the time and this is not the bill."
His staff says this was done intentionally, and that he deliberately voted first and loudl

UPDATE: The mockery continues. It's a shame that he's named Brownback, since the "Switchback" nickname is going to stick. If he were named "Smith" or "Jones," his critics wouldn't have that opportunity...

I don’t think that Sam knows about the Way Back Machine - the thinks that you post on the web can come back to haunt you.
BTW, I will actively support, help fund, and vote for his Republican primary opponent. He is too weird for this Kansan.

If he voted our way, why gripe? Is he now just damned if he does and damned if he doesn't? That will get us nowhere in the future.
There is a big difference between changing your vote and changing your position in a campaign. Now this may be both, but it is hardly wise to slam a guy who did what you wanted him to do where it counted. Slam him for voting one way and then campaigning another. That's legit. But it is not legit if the change has a real result you can see.
The problem with flip-flopper Romney is that his change is all talk. Sam has a long conservative record. He fell for the Bush line on immigration and it burned him. If Brownback has a flaw it is that he can sometimes be too much of a team player. Of course that can be good or bad,, depending on the application. In this case it wasn't good. But Sam Brownback in general is no flip-flopper. Not even close.
I thank him for his vote.

He had his epiphany about 2/3 of the way through the vote. And most importantly after the 41st no vote was cast.
This reminds me of all the annoying kids at school who would run out and buy the shirts, jackets, hats, etc, of the winning team instead of sticking with a team through thick and thin.

If he voted our way, why gripe? Uh, because he voted against us only until he found out that the cloture vote was going to fail. His No vote was superfluous at that point.

That may be. He felt the heat (as we wanted all the Senators to feel) and so he did what we wanted him to in the end. So hold it against him on this one issue. To try to ruin the man who has a solid conservative record would be a suicide move. We cannot afford to ruin a good conservative over this one issue. Who do you figure will replace him? Maybe you would prefer Dennis Moore to replace him. I sure wouldn’t.

Sam Brownback, the Republican Kerry (”I voted for cloture before I voted against it - c’mon, can’t you simpletons see the logic? Oh, by the way, I served in Vietnam and want to be President.”).
Regarding your run for President: Buh, bye! Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
To: elizabetty
If the issue comes up again (it could) I’m sure all the Senators will be more careful about listening to us when they see how we crucify the ones who voted our way. Why not focus on the one’s who didn’t vote our way?

First , he voted “yes.” Then, he voted “no” but only after 41 senators had already voted. Brokeback immediately shifted his vote as it became clear that the cloture motion had failed.
