Mexican president says vote 'a grave error'
Houston Chronicle ^ | 20070628 | DUDLEY ALTHAUS

President Felipe Calderon of Mexico reacted sourly to news of the Senate's rejection of the proposed immigration law overhaul, calling the senators' action "a grave error."

"It's a grave mistake first because it's a problem that's not being confronted, and with this evasive action the U.S. Senate is making it worse," Calderon told reporters in Mexico City during a joint news conference with President Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua, who is finishing a two-day visit to the Mexican capital.

"Secondly, because to close the door on legal immigration, the only thing the Senate does is open the door to illegal immigration" the Mexican president said, according to an account published by the newspaper Reforma on its Web page.

Calderon repeated his "repudiation and rejection" of plans to build a wall along much of the U.S.-Mexico border.

More than a tenth of Mexico's 103 million people are estimated to live in the United States, many of them illegally. Hundreds of thousands of Mexicans, and others from Central America, continue to cross the border every year illegally in search of work.

Mexico's emigrants last year sent nearly $25 billion home to family members. That money has become an important anchor in many rural communities and poor metropolitan neighborhoods.

Ortega, a one-time Marxist president of Nicaragua following that country's 1970s leftist revolution against a U.S.-backed dictator, was in Mexico City to strengthen ties with Mexico and also to visit the shrine to the Virgin of Guadalupe.

The Nicaraguan president had vowed to visit the shrine if he won election this year, which he did, returning to power 17 years after being voted out of office.

Well, in our current political climate nothing the Mexican El Presidente says is construed to be out of line. That’s been a big part of the problem. We’ve got nobody at the top that will tell them that our laws are none of their damn business.

Of course if our leaders did and Mexican’s leaders didn’t like it, they could keep their moochers home.

Comments from the leader of what is truly just another turd-world country. Ho-hum. The thing that has always amazed me is how once they are here, legally or otherwise, citizens of that south of the border landfill can proudly wave Mexican flags when their home country pretty much denied them life above the sub-poverty level.

What a difference a decade makes... Lindsey has destroyed his credibility as a conservative IMO. Quite right. He’d make a great bullseye.

I’d like to see a number of Republican left-leaning (or just anti-American sovereignty) big-mouths challenged in upcoming primaries. Time to clean house in earnest...

Grave mistake? Would that be, like, his grave? Maybe because he can’t get rid of his misfits???

Yeah, that’s a grave mistake.

Ortega, a one-time Marxist president of Nicaragua...

Ortega is a "one-time Marxist" just like Hillary is a "one-time Marxist".

I was living in SC when Lindsey originally ran. The great irony is that he ran as a strict term limits proponent, against the “ruling class” of perpetual incumbents. Lindsey SWORE he was going to DC for a few years, then home.

Frikkin’ liar, as well as traitor.

For those that haven’t seen Mexico’s illegal immigration laws:

- There will be no special bilingual programs in the schools, no special ballots for election, and all government business will be conducted in our language.

- Foreigners will not have the right to vote, no matter how long they are here.

- Foreigners will never be able to hold political office.

- Foreigners will not be a burden to the taxpayers. No welfare, No food stamps, No free health care, nor any other government assistance program.

- Foreigners can invest in this country, but it must be amount equal to 40,000 times the daily minimum wage.

- If foreigners do come and want to buy land that is fine, but options will be restricted. You are not allowed to own waterfront property. That property is reserved for citizens naturally born to this country.

- Foreigners may not protest; No demonstrations, no waving a foreign flag, no political organizing, no criticism of our president or his policies. If you do any of these things you will be deported.

- If you do come to this country illegally, you will be hunted down and sent straight to jail.

You seem to have divined the meaning of his remarks better than I did.

Maybe mexico shouldn’t interfere with the internal affairs of the United States, eh?

Mexico's emigrants last year sent nearly $25 billion home to family members.

A ten percent tax on transfers of cash out of the country would put a huge dent in that, and help with the deficit. I'm sure the Democrats will hurry to put up such legilation to quell the deficit they're so concerned about.

Rush Limbaugh is a “johnny come lately”. He refused to talk ablout illegal immigration years ago and now has waited almost too late. He finally jumped on the band wagon when everyone else did.

The only grave error was the US Government allowing the corrupt governments of Mexico to get away with forcing the USA tax payers to carry their sorry asses for way too long.

Do the right thing in your Mexico El Presidente and stay out of our business.

Call home your 20 million citizens whom you have sent here illegally. If people with very little education is good for the economy; you need them a hell of a lot worse than we do.

Go ahead, take ‘em, we will stumble along the best we can without ‘em. ;-)
