Stopping a bad bill in congress is good, but it was a choice between bad and worse, and so now we just have the same bad situation we've had since 1964, 1986 etc.

If you think the defeat of the 2007 immigration bill is unworthy of pride, you're too negative. First of all, you think this defeat is nothing because "we just have the same bad situation we've had since 1964, 1986 etc."

You're wrong.

Why? Because in 1964 and 1986, immigration bills were signed. In 2007, the bill couldn't even make it out of Congress.

In 1964 and 1986, the citizens sat on their apathetic asses and let their government pass amnesty. In 2007, both conservative and liberal citizens mobilized to defeat this bill.

Do you see the trend?

We've passed the tipping point.

This ain't 1964 and 1986.

If you can't see how good this is, just pat yourself on the back for living in denial.

You're right, of course. This isn't '86 or '64.

The illegal problem is orders of magnitude bigger, and growing.

One thing that's similar is that the problem has just been kicked down the road again. Reagan kicked the problem into 2007. Now the problem has been punted to the 2008 prez election and beyond because (1) Bush has no intention of enforcing the border, and (2) no true fix conservative bill is going to pass Pelosi/Reid's morass.

Meanwhile, we're so proud (before the fall).

I've just seen the right 'win' so many times, only to start self-congratulating so much that we immediately lose the initiative. It's the nature of Russell Kirk's "Conservative Mind."

Call me 'negative,' dour, whatever. I just think we're a long way from cheering our way out of this hole.
